Over 220 years before Genero arrived in the sand hills of North Carolina, a small band of hardy Scots navigated their flat-bottomed boats up the Cape Fear River to establish the tiny villages of Cross Creek and Campbellton. The dense forests of loblolly pine, the well-drained soil, and the convenience of a navigable river for shipping produce and lumber to the small town of Wilmington on the Atlantic coast inspired the colonists’ pioneer spirit.
Fifty years later, the original sites merged into a single town. The citizens named the new municipality Fayetteville, in honor of the French Marquis, who’d become a hero in the American Revolution.
