I guess even Doc Hansen changed after Pearl Harbor. No! It had to be Corregidor. That was a tough blow, Sullivan thought as the corpsmen stitched up his calf. “Don’t worry, Mister Sullivan. We’ll let you go back. We can’t give you morphine for the pain. It would adversely affect your flying abilities,” Doc Hansen explained with no hint of emotion. “That’s OK by me, Doc. The pain’s not that bad. When it gets bad, it’ll give me one more reason to be pissed at the Japs.” This afternoon, on the second sortie as the first Japanese picket ships hove into view in the blue distance, Sullivan remembered the first time he’d really noticed Doc.
