Aunt Kathleen and Uncle Bob asked if I"d like to stay the night, but as the minutes passed after Gabe left, the enticement of his kiss told me I couldn"t wait until tomorrow to see him. I"d surprise him at Lola"s and maybe stay there and make my way home in the morning. The Carters thought I was catching the last bus home to the Burgess"s and they in turn knew that I sometimes stayed at the Carter"s, so Gabe could be assured that there would be no shame or raised eyebrows in spending the night, innocently or not, in the home of a single man.
