CHAPTER 17
“ Fine, I will select a doctor from here to watch over her while I'm gone, that's all I can do’
Timothy said, informing the elder that he could not stay full-time to care for Elizabeth but would select a doctor from the hospital to watch over her in his absence.
Once alone with Davis in the room where Elizabeth lay unconscious, the elder seized the moment to inquire if Elizabeth had ever mentioned why she wanted to meet him. With a bittersweet smile, Davis confessed that he had found something significant related to Elizabeth.
The elder's curiosity was piqued. "What?” he asked, eager to know more. “She had the brown box with her,” Davis revealed. This revelation caused the elder's expression to shift from concern to shock and excitement. He demanded to know the box's location, and Davis informed him it was in the car.
“should I take i it back to the mansion” the butler asked seeing the old man go silent.
“No , hand the box over to my granddaughter and emphasize the importance of its contents make her understand how necessary it is that she protecs the box”. The elder instructed Davis,His thoughts briefly turned to Judy, and he queried,
“Is she aware?”
Davis responded that he had informed Robert the previous night, implying that Judy must have been notified by now. The elder then emphasized the need for Davis to remain by his daughter’s side unless he arranged for someone else to take over. Davis proposed bringing Judy to the hospital, but the elder dismissed the idea, confident that Judy would on her own, arrive soon given the news of her mother.
After leaving the ward, the elder encountered Robert at the hospital's reception.
“Elizabeth Wilson” he had heard the man say to a nurse who gave him directions to Elizabeth's ward and From the corner where he stood, he stared at the man with eyes filled with content until Robert was out of his sight.
After exiting the hospital, the elder got into his car where his driver and men were waiting for him ,he took out his phone to make a call, ordering someone to investigate Robert Wilson’s activities over the past months, suspecting foul play. He contemplated that if Robert was indeed poisoning Elizabeth, then he would have no reasons to hesitate in taking his life.
Less than ten minutes after the elder departed, Robert entered the room, visibly distressed and confused. The butler trailed him, concerned about the interaction that may or may not have taken place between Robert and the elder. He wondered if both men had crossed paths but he doubted it as Robert was still in one piece.
Robert rushed to Elizabeth's side, bewildered and lost. He posed the question, “How did she end up like this?” indicating his lack of understanding regarding the situation. The air was thick with tension as Robert grappled with the shocking sight of his wife’s unconscious form.
The narrative unfolds in a place of uncertainty and looming danger, as both the elder and Robert's motivations come into play. The elder's protective instincts for his daughter are at odds with Robert's seemingly frantic concern; however, the elder's burgeoning suspicion of Robert suggests a darker undertone. The implications of the brown box and the elder's determination to uncover the truth .
Robert had intended to visit the hospital the previous night but received a warning that Papaya had dispatched men to surveil him. Given his recent violent confrontation with Papaya, where he had been beaten to pop, he feared a repeat of the incident, which caused him great distress throughout the night. To worsen his fears, he had sent his daughter, Judith, away hoping she would realize that she couldn't do anything without him but up untill this morning, Judy had not returned, leading to an agonizing night of worry.
Davis, observing the man’s deepening fatigue reflected in dark circles under his eyes, chose not to comment on it, despite recognizing the subtle yet significant changes on the man’s face. As someone that was used to being involved in bloody fights, he could tell when ones injuries came from blows and fist fights, but given that this man was his boss, he felt it inappropriate to question him.
"Where is Judith, sir?" Davis asked politely, already aware that if Judith learned of her mother’s dire state, she would not hesitate to show up here.
it would complicate matters further if the butler finds out. This inquiry startled Robert, who understood that the butler had been assigned to Elizabeth as her body guard for her safety since she had been severed her ties with the Devalors several times. The implications of the butler discovering Judith’s absence weighed heavily on Robert, as it deviated from his original intentions.
Recent events had not unfolded as Robert anticipated. He had expected Judith to remain at home, and when she did leave, he thought she would return quickly. As the night turned into morning without her return, he felt increasingly anxious about how he would explain Judith's absence to Elizabeth and especially Charles. The mere thought of the butler discovering the truth heightened his anxiety.
“Oh, Judith…. you know how she is with her mother….uhm, I could not bring myself to tell her,”
he stammered, contemplating how he might address the situation when he returned home. However, it was the tone in which he spoke that caught Davis's attention, causing him to feel a sense of unease. Robert seemed to be placing unexpected emphasis on Judith’s feelings, which struck Davis as unusual. Since when was the man concerned with how Judith felt.
"Where is the doctor treating my wife?" Robert asked sharply, shifting the topic. This inquiry set off alarms for Davis; he realized that Robert must not learn that the Devalors were involved, especially since it had recently been discovered that Robert's wife was poisoned. With everyone in the mansion now a potential suspect, it was critical to maintain discretion. As Davis struggled to formulate a response, the door swung open, interrupted by a man clad in a white hospital coat.
“Good morning, gentlemen. I am Dr. Travis,"
he announced, shifting the atmosphere in the room. The unexpected arrival of the doctor brought a new layer of tension to the unfolding drama. Robert's focus shifted to the doctor, eager for answers regarding his wife’s condition, while Davis prepared himself for the precarious situation that lay ahead as secrets began to intertwine amidst concern and desperation. The reality of the threats surrounding both Robert and Judith loomed large.
