CHAPTER 13
Vincent, the son of Agnes, had caught snippets of conversation from the maids as he drove into the compound, instinctively knowing something was amiss. His unease deepened when he discovered Judy's belongings in the living room. “Mother, what have you done this time?” he questioned Agnes upon entering the house, his usual calmness slipping away. Noticing the butler's absence, he hurried to Elizabeth's room, only to find the door locked, which only fueled his anxiety.
He went down the large space, heading for the exit.
“Where do you think you're going to”.
But ,ignoring the inquiries directed at him, particularly from Robert, who was observing the unfolding tension, Vincent dashed for the exit, leaving the mansion in the car he had driven in with.
Robert, torn between guilt and self-preservation, watched the events unravel. Despite feeling terrible about the circumstances, he convinced himself that this would turn out for the best. He was certain that Judy would return to him soon, as she and Elizabeth had nowhere else to go. Caught up in thoughts of his own safety and fate, he was ready to sever ties if Judy became his lifeline. He was earlier uncertain of Elizabeth's whereabouts but had later seen an SMS from the lady that she was going to take care of things at one of her boutiques. Deep down, he hoped she wouldn't come back till Judy returned, as he knew she wasn't going to take his actions likely.
“This will work” he murmured, reaffirming to himself that this was for the best.
His contemplation was suddenly interrupted by a call from Davis, the butler. Robert had initially been surprised to find Elizabeth's room locked earlier, but he later received a text from her indicating that she was at one of her boutiques checking on operations. Although curious about her absence, he felt relief that Elizabeth wasn’t home to witness the chaos unfolding in the compound. However, when Davis's unexpected call flashed on his phone, Robert's curiosity turned to confusion as he wondered why the butler still had not returned home, given that the maids had earlier mentioned that he had errands to run.
Wondering why Davis was calling and why he was not home yet, Robert picked the phone, placing it to his ear, but the news from the butler made his eyes go wide in shock.
Vincent drove anxiously around the estate searching for Judith but found no trace of her, igniting concerns about her safety. That night, he realized, despite living under the same roof for years, he didn’t have Judith’s phone number; even if he did, her phone had been taken away. The weight of his inability to reach out struck him, making him question the kind of father Robert was.
Upon returning to the compound, Vincent was met with the sight of Robert, visibly panicked, waiting for his driver. An air of unease blanketed the atmosphere, raising Vincent’s suspicions and making him wonder if they had received any unsettling news about Judy. Approaching his mother, he noted the absence of her usual nonchalance; instead, worry mingled with a hint of excitement played across her face. This peculiar shift in Agnes's demeanor only fueled Vincent's unease as he struggled to make sense of the chaos enveloping their household, desperate for answers and the safety of his half-sister.
With his brows slightly furrowed, Vincent approached his mother, quietly voicing his concern, “What have you done again?” he asked in an audible whisper. Agnes, turning to him with a frown, responded defensively, rolling her eyes, “Accusing your dear mother? Well, it was Elizabeth; she was involved in a fatal accident this afternoon.”

Davis sat anxiously in one of the chairs outside the hospital theater room, worry etched on his face. He had been trailing behind Elizabeth, who was younger than him, as she drove along a busy road. Although he was unsure about her thoughts, he felt relieved that she was beginning to reflect on something important. Their drive had been smooth until a large truck, losing control, crashed into any vehicle in its path. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's car was one of those caught in the chaos.
The collision was catastrophic, with reports emerging that multiple lives were lost in the accident. The suddenness of the event left Davis alarmed and wide-eyed. The truck driver, realizing the extent of the disaster he had caused, managed to steer the vehicle away into the trees. When onlookers arrived at the crash site, they discovered that the truck’s driver had vanished.
In a panic, Davis rushed to the scene where Elizabeth's car had been crumpled against the rocks. He found her unconscious, blood streaming from a wound on her forehead. Although she was alive, he feared for her life as he struggled to comprehend the severity of the situation. The driver’s door had been crushed to such an extent that it was impossible for him to extricate her on his own.
With assistance from a few bystanders, Davis was finally able to pull Elizabeth from the wreckage. Relief washed over him when he confirmed that she was still breathing. However, as he returned to the car to retrieve her belongings, his curiosity led him to discover a wooden casing resting on the front passenger seat, which added an unexpected layer to the ordeal.
