I wasn’t in the mood to continue my shopping ,so I paid and went home. The moment I closed the front door behind me, my body felt heavier than it should have. My heels clicked across the tiles in uneven beats, and my purse slid down my shoulder like it knew I had no energy left to keep it in place. My mind wasn’t here. It was stuck on that man waking up. Jessica’s text had come while I was still in the car. “He asked me if I saw the man in the mask too…” I stared at those words so long I forgot to breathe. Now, in the quiet of the living room, James wasn’t back. I pulled my phone out again and opened our chat. My fingers hovered over the keyboard before I typed, * “The guy woke up. What are you going to do?” I sent it to the masked man the number he said I could use to reach him.
