After school, Elena and I go home to change and do some homework before going to the party. I put my little first aid kit in my purse as Elena comes into my room.
Elena: “Seriously? When do we ever need that?”
She giggles.
Skylar: “We’ve had this discussion before, Elena. Someone laughs about my first aid kit, then someone ends up getting hurt, and it’s not so funny anymore.”
Elena: “You’re right. Sorry. Are you ready to go?”
Skylar: “Yup. Let’s go.”
We get in my jeep and finally go to the party, where we split up to chat with friends. I grab a beer and hangout with Matt, who keeps glancing at Elena.
Skylar: “Matt, you need to stop worrying about it. I know it’s hard, but if it’s meant to be, she’ll come back to you. She just needs some time to figure out what she wants.”
Matt: “Yeah, you’re right, it’s just so hard. I miss her so much.”
Skylar: “I can tell. So let’s get your mind off of it.”
We get more beer and Bonnie & Caroline end up joining us. He still won’t stop glancing at Elena, who is with Stefan right now. But we finally get Matt to enjoy himself at least a little bit.
A few beers later and my cup is empty yet again. I go to the keg to refill and when I turn around, I almost spill my drink on someone.
Skylar: “Oh god, sorry.”
?: “It’s cool. Sorry, I frightened you.”
I look up to see a very handsome stranger wearing a leather jacket. He has dark hair and blue eyes that just scream danger, but I can’t help looking at him.
Skylar: “No, it’s okay. I just didn’t expect someone to be right there when I turned around. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before.”
?: “No, I just moved here. I’m Damon.”
He has this sexy smirk on his face and I don’t know why, but I’m totally mesmerized by him.
Skylar: “I’m Skylar. Did you want to grab a beer?”
Damon: “Yeah.”
I pass him a cup which he fills for himself. As we walk over to the bonfire I hear Elena start screaming for help as she and Jeremy are carrying someone out of the woods and Matt starts freaking out. I quickly go over to them to see Vicki is unconscious and bleeding.
Tyler: “What happened?”
Matt: “Bonnie, call an ambulance!”
Tyler: “Everybody back up. Give her some space.”
I kneel down beside her to check her wound. Elena is crying as she is trying to tell me what she knows. For a split second I realize I have seen this before, but I shake the thought away.
Elena: “It’s her neck. Something bit her. She’s losing a lot of blood.”
Skylar: “Let me apply some first aid.”
Matt nods frantically and I put my jacket under Vicki’s head as I take out my ziploc bag of basic first aid from my purse. I wipe off her wound with an alcohol wipe and try to stop the bleeding and prevent anything else from getting to her wound by putting gauze over it and putting pressure on it. Meanwhile, Matt is on her other side trying to talk to her.
Matt: “Vicki, come on, open your eyes. Look at me.”
Bonnie: “The paramedics are on their way.”
Eventually the paramedics and animal control arrive. The paramedics put Vicki on a stretcher and into the ambulance while one of them questions us on what happened. After telling them all we know, we watch Matt get in the ambulance with Vicki and leave.
Bonnie: “Hey, we’re gonna go mainline coffee and wait for news.”
Elena: “I gotta take Jeremy home.”
Bonnie: “Elena, there’s no way I’m psychic. I know that. But whatever I saw, or I think I saw… I have this feeling…”
Elena: “Bonnie, what?”
Bonnie: “That it’s just the beginning.”
Skylar: “I’ll go with you, Bonnie. I want to make sure Vicki is okay.”
I hug Elena.
Skylar: “I’ll keep you in the loop.”
Elena: “Thanks, I’m gonna stay with Jeremy, make sure he’s okay. Remind me to never make fun of your first aid kit.”
Skylar: “I’ve told you before, whenever someone makes fun of it, that’s when someone ends up needing it.”
She nods before going over to Jeremy. Bonnie, Caroline, and I go to the Grill to have coffee and sober up. Caroline is holding her head up while sulking.
Bonnie: “Are you sober yet?”
She takes a deep breath before pouting again.
Caroline: “Nope.”
Bonnie: “Keep drinking. I gotta get you home. I gotta get me home.”
She quickly looks up at us.
Caroline: “Why didn’t he go for me? How come the guys that I want never want me?”
Bonnie: “I’m not touching that.”
I wait for her to continue.
Caroline: “I’m inappropriate. I always say the wrong thing. And Elena always says the right thing. Ugh, she doesn’t even try. And he just picks her. And she’s always the one that everyone picks…for everything. And I try so hard…and... I’m never the one that…”
Bonnie: “It’s not a competition, Caroline.”
Skylar: “Oh please, be grateful you don’t have to live with her 24/7. I have that problem more than anyone. I have never had a boyfriend. Whenever I try, I hesitate a second too long and then they just go for my sister. Do I ever say anything? No. Elena is my sister and I don’t want anything to come between us. But it’s infuriating.”
I sigh and lay my head face down on the table. Someone’s hand starts rubbing my back and I look up to see Bonnie giving me a sympathetic smile and Caroline’s sad pouty face.
Skylar: “I just wish I could turn off my jealousy. I feel like I don’t even have the right to be jealous, cause she has no idea and she’s not doing it on purpose. I know that.”
Bonnie: “Hey, it’s okay. You know Elena would never want to hurt you like that. Besides, do you really want to be with a boy who would pick your sister over you?”
Skylar: “No. You’re right.”
She and Caroline hug me. We finally sober up and go our separate ways. When I get home, I sit on my bed and open my dream journal to last night’s dream entry. I find that I had written ‘Vicki, in the woods, losing a lot of blood.’ It was a vague dream which is why I couldn’t remember it. I can’t believe this has happened two days in a row.
