CHAPTER TWO Lyra’s POV The rogue’s grip tightened on my arm. Pain shot through me, but I barely felt it. Because all I could focus on… Was him. The man standing in the shadows. There was something about him that made the air feel heavy. Like even the forest itself knew he didn’t belong here. Like everything around him had to obey. The rogues felt it too. I could see it in their faces. That brief flicker of hesitation. But it didn’t last. “This doesn’t concern you,” the rogue holding me said, trying to sound confident. Trying. The man finally looked at him. And the moment their eyes met— Something shifted. “You’re touching what’s mine.” My breath caught. Mine? The word echoed in my head, confusing and terrifying at the same time. The rogue laughed, but it sounded forced. “Yours?” he said. “She’s just some weak—” He didn’t finish. He didn’t get the chance. Because in the next second— The man moved. Fast. Too fast. One moment he was standing still. The next, he was right in front of us. His hand shot out, grabbing the rogue’s wrist. A sharp twist A loud c***k. The rogue screamed as his grip on me broke instantly. My arm was free. I stumbled back, my heart racing. Before the man could recover— A punch landed. Hard. The rogue dropped to the ground like his body just gave up. The others rushed in, growling, claws out. But he didn’t step back. He stepped forward. Calm yet aggressive, Controlled yet chaotic The first one lunged He dodged easily, like he saw it coming. His elbow slammed into the man’s chest. Another c***k. The second rogue barely got close before he was grabbed and thrown aside like he weighed nothing. his body hit the ground hard. The last one hesitated. Just for a second. That was enough. The man closed the distance instantly One clean move. And the fight was over. Silence fell across the clearing. Heavy. Unnatural. Bodies lay still on the ground. None of them got back up. I stood there, frozen, my chest rising and falling too fast. Trying to understand what I just saw. He turned to me. And for the first time, I saw his face clearly. He looked… young. Maybe early thirties. Dark hair, slightly messy like he didn’t care to fix it. Cold eyes that didn’t soften even when they were on me. But it wasn’t just his looks. It was his presence. It felt like standing too close to a storm. “You’re burning,” he said. His voice was lower now. Still calm. But there was something else in it. Something darker. I swallowed. “I don’t know what’s happening,” I said, my voice barely steady. He stepped closer. Slow. Measured. With every step, my heart beat faster. Not just from fear. The heat inside me reacted too. Growing stronger. My body felt strange. Too aware. Too sensitive. His scent hit me before he even reached me. And it was worse than before. Stronger. Richer. It wrapped around me, pulling at something deep inside me again. My knees felt weak. I took a step back. “I… I need to go,” I said quickly. I didn’t. Not really. But staying felt dangerous. In a different way. His eyes darkened slightly. “No.” The word was quiet. But firm. My breath hitched. “I have to—” “You’re in heat.” My face burned. “I’m not—” “You are.” His voice didn’t rise. Didn’t change. But it still shut me up. Because deep down… I knew he was right. “I’ve never…” I whispered. “My wolf—” “Isn’t dormant.” My head snapped up. “What?” He stepped even closer. Now there was barely any space between us. “You’ve been suppressed,” he said. “I don’t understand…” “You don’t need to.” That control. That way of speaking like everything was already decided. “I can’t stay here,” I said, panic creeping in again. “Those rogues—what if there are more?” “There won’t be.” “How do you know?” “Because they won’t come near me.” The way he said it… Like it was a fact. Like it wasn’t even a question. “Who are you?” I asked. He held my gaze for a few seconds. Then— “Someone you don’t want to cross.” That didn’t answer anything. But somehow, it still felt like enough. The heat inside me flared again, making me gasp softly. My body betrayed me completely. My fingers curled slightly as I tried to steady myself. “I don’t feel right…” “I know.” His eyes dropped slightly. Not fully. But enough to make my breath catch again. “You need to be controlled.” My heart skipped. “Controlled?” “Yes.” “I don’t need—” “You do.” He stepped even closer. If that was even possible. My back hit a tree before I realized I had been moving. Trapped. My breathing became uneven. His hand lifted slightly. And for a second— I thought he was going to touch me. But he didn’t. Not yet. “You don’t understand what happens if this gets worse,” he said. “Then explain it to me!” “You’ll beg.” The words came out low. Serious. And something about the way he said it made my stomach tighten. “I won’t,” I said quickly. His lips tilted slightly. Not quite a smile. But close. “You will.” I shook my head, even though my body was already reacting in ways I couldn’t control. “I don’t even know you.” “You don’t need to.” “I do!” Silence. Then— “Eryx.” I blinked. “What?” “My name.” Eryx. The name felt… heavy. Important. Like it carried something with it. But I didn’t know what. “I’m Lyra,” I said quietly. “I know.” That made me pause. “How?” But he didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped back slightly. Just enough to create space. “Can you walk?” he asked. I nodded, even though I wasn’t sure. “Yes.” “Good.” “Where are we going?” “You’re coming with me.” My heart jumped. “What? No—I’m not going anywhere with you.” “You are.” “No, I’m not,” I said, trying to sound stronger than I felt. He looked at me. Really looked at me. “You don’t have a choice.” “I always have a choice.” “Not tonight.” My chest tightened. “Why?” “Because if you stay out here,” he said, his voice dropping slightly, “you won’t survive the night.” Silence fell between us. And for the first time… I believed him. I looked around the forest. Dark. Quiet. Dangerous. Then back at him. More dangerous. But somehow… Safer. “I don’t trust you,” I said. “You don’t have to.” “That’s not comforting.” “It’s not supposed to be.” A small pause. Then— “Move.” I hesitated for a second. Then slowly stepped forward. Because deep down… I knew one thing. Whatever was happening to me… I couldn’t face it alone. I took a few steps. Then stopped. “Wait.” He turned slightly. “What?” “Those men…” His eyes darkened. “They won’t be a problem again.” I swallowed. Something about that answer felt final. Too final. I didn’t ask anything else. We started walking. Deeper into the forest. Away from everything I knew. And straight into something I didn’t understand. After a few minutes, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. The heat. It was getting worse. Every step felt heavier. My breathing uneven. My thoughts clouded. “Eryx…” I whispered. He stopped immediately. Turned. And the moment his eyes met mine— Something changed. His expression hardened slightly. Like he saw something he didn’t expect. “What?” he asked. “I… I don’t think I can—” My knees gave out before I could finish. But I didn’t hit the ground. His arms caught me instantly. Strong. Warm. Too warm. A soft sound escaped my lips before I could stop it. My body reacted again. Leaning into him slightly. Without permission. Without control. His grip tightened just a little. And for a second… Neither of us moved. His scent surrounded me completely now. And it made everything worse. Or better. I didn’t know anymore. “Lyra…” The way he said my name Lower. Rougher. It made my heart race even faster. “I can’t…” I whispered. My fingers curled slightly against his chest. “I know.” His voice wasn’t as calm anymore. Something was slipping. Something dangerous. Then— He lifted me. Just like that. Effortless. “What are you doing?” I asked weakly. “Taking you somewhere safe.” My head spun slightly. “This doesn’t feel safe…” “It is.” “Why?” A pause. Then— “Because you’re with me.” I didn’t know why… But that answer made my chest tighten in a completely different way. And as everything around me started to blur One thought stayed clear in my mind. I had just left my old life behind. And whatever came next… Was going to change everything.
