CHAPTER FOUR
Lyra’s POV
His jaw tightened slightly.
“What kind of problem?”
A pause.
Then—
“Rogues were found near the outer border.”
My heart dropped.
More rogues?
Eryx’s grip on my wrist tightened for just a second.
Then he let go.
But the warmth of his touch stayed.
“Handle it,” he said.
“Yes sir” the guard spoke suddenly as was about to exit the room
“And sir,” the guard stopped to say.
Now feeling disturbed again,
“What” Eryx answered, sounding like he was trying his best not to crash out.
“They mentioned a name.”
Eryx’s eyes darkened.
Now the guard had his full attention.
“What name?”
The guard keeping everybody in suspense, trying to remember, like he didn’t just hear it 60 seconds ago.
Patiently waiting.
Until.
Finally, his mouth quickly caught up with his brain.
“Ly…. Uhmm.. lyra? Something like that.” The guard said.
Suddenly my breath stopped.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Too tight.
Eryx turned to me slowly.
“Looks like someone’s famous," he said quietly,
My heart started racing again.
Faster.
Harder.
Because now I knew one thing for sure—
This wasn’t random.
And whatever I had stepped into…
It wasn’t going to let me go.
“Why would they be looking for me” I asked myself
The question kept repeating in my head, over and over again.
Lyra.
Why would rogues be looking for me?
I had nothing.
No power. No status.
Nothing worth hunting.
“That’s not possible,” I said quickly, my voice not as steady as I wanted.
Eryx didn’t answer.
He just kept looking at me.
Like he was trying to figure something out.
“Say something,” I snapped, the panic starting to rise again. “Why would they be looking for me?”
“They don’t move without reason,” he said.
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
“It’s the only answer you’re getting right now.”
Frustration hit instantly.
“You keep doing that.”
“Doing what?”
“Talking like I don’t deserve to know what’s happening to me!”
His expression didn’t change.
But his voice dropped slightly.
“You don’t.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
“What?” I said, stunned.
“You don’t deserve answers yet.”
My chest tightened.
“That doesn’t even make sense.”
“It does.”
“No, it doesn’t!”
My voice came out louder this time.
I didn’t care.
I was tired of this.
Tired of being confused.
Tired of being pushed around like I didn’t matter.
“This is about me!” I continued. “My life, my safety—and you’re standing there like I’m just some problem you need to manage!”
Everywhere turned silent.
I could feel the tension in the room rising
Then—
Eryx broke the silence
“You are a problem.” He said
The words came out calm.
I felt something in me go dim
“I’m tired”
“I didn’t ask for this!” I said. “I didn’t ask for you, for this place, for whatever is happening to me”
“No,” he agreed.
“You didn’t.”
That stopped me for a second.
Because there was no anger in his voice.
No mockery.
Just… truth.
“Then stop treating me like I did,” I said more quietly.
A pause.
Then he stepped closer.
Slowly
“You’re here now,” he said. “That’s what matters.”
“That doesn’t make it okay.”
“I didn’t say it did.”
I clenched my jaw.
“Then what are you saying?”
“That things don’t stay the same.”
I frowned slightly.
“What does that mean?”
His eyes held mine for a second.
“It means your life is no longer yours.”
The words landed slowly.
Just when I thought he was beginning to make a little bit of sense.
“What?” I whispered.
“You heard me.”
“No,” I shook my head. “No, that’s not how this works.”
“It is now.”
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I already did.”
My chest tightened again.
Anger. Fear. Confusion.
Everything mixed together.
“I’m not yours,” I said firmly.
The moment the words left my mouth—
Something changed.
The air shifted.
His expression darkened slightly.
Not fully.
But enough.
“Careful,” he said quietly.
That word again.
A warning.
I didn’t stop.
“I don’t belong to you,” I added.
Silence.
Then—
“You belong where I say you belong.”
My breath caught.
The way he said it—
Low.
Certain.
Possessive.
It sent a strange feeling through me.
Something I didn’t understand.
Something I didn’t like.
“You don’t own me,” I said, even though my voice wasn’t as strong now.
“No,” he agreed.
“I don’t.”
That surprised me.
For a second.
Then he added—
“But I can protect you.”
The room went quiet again.
And just like that, the tension shifted.
Slightly.
“I don’t need protection,” I said.
“You needed it last night.”
I didn’t respond.
Because he was right.
And I hated that.
Another wave of heat hit me suddenly.
Stronger.
Sharper.
My breath caught as I grabbed the edge of the bed again.
“Lyra.”
His voice changed.
More serious now.
Less distant.
“It’s getting worse,” I whispered.
“I know.”
“You said you could control it.”
“I can.”
“Then do something!”
My voice came out more desperate than I wanted.
But I couldn’t help it.
This feeling—
It was too much.
He stepped closer again.
Slow.
Every movement careful.
Like he didn’t want to scare me.
But he already did.
“Look at me,” he said.
I hesitated.
Then slowly lifted my eyes to his.
Big mistake.
Because the moment I did—
The world felt smaller.
Quieter.
Like it was just him.
Just us.
“Your wolf is reacting,” he said. “To me.”
“I don’t have a wolf,” I whispered.
“You do.”
“I’ve never felt it before.”
“That doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.”
His hand lifted again.
Slow.
Like before.
But this time—
I didn’t pull back.
His fingers brushed against my arm.
And my body reacted instantly.
A soft gasp left my lips.
My knees weakened slightly.
“This is what you need to control,” he said.
“I don’t know how…”
“I do.”
My heart skipped.
“What are you saying?”
Silence.
Then—
“You need a stronger presence.”
I frowned slightly.
“I don’t understand.”
“You will.”
That didn’t help.
Nothing he said ever helped.
It just made things more confusing.
“I’m not letting you control me,” I said.
“I’m not asking.”
That again.
That control.
That certainty.
It frustrated me.
And scared me at the same time.
“Then what are you doing?”
A pause.
Then—
“Helping you survive.”
Before I could respond—
The door opened suddenly.
No knock this time.
A woman stepped in.
Tall. Well dressed. Sharp eyes.
She stopped the moment she saw me.
Then her gaze moved to Eryx.
Something unreadable passed between them.
“Your Majesty,” she said, her voice calm. “We need to talk.”
“I’m busy.”
“It’s urgent.”
Silence.
Then she looked at me again.
Longer this time.
More carefully.
Like she was studying me.
Judging me.
And whatever she saw—
She didn’t like it.
“She’s the one?” the woman asked.
Eryx didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The woman’s expression hardened slightly.
“She doesn’t look like much.”
The words hit.
Hard.
I felt my chest tighten again.
There it was.
That familiar feeling.
Being looked down on.
Being seen as nothing.
“She’s not your concern,” Eryx said.
“She will be,” the woman replied. “If the council finds out.”
My heart skipped.
Council?
What council?
“What are you talking about?” I asked, looking between them.
No one answered.
Again.
Of course.
“They’re already asking questions,” the woman continued. “And if they connect her to—”
“Enough.”
His voice cut her off instantly.
Cold.
Sharp.
Final.
The room went silent.
The woman held his gaze for a second.
Then nodded slightly.
But before she turned to leave—
She looked at me one more time.
And this time…
There was something else in her eyes.
Not just judgment.
Not just dislike.
Fear.
“She’s going to be a problem,” she said quietly.
Then she walked out.
The door closed behind her.
And the silence that followed—
Felt heavier than before.
I swallowed slowly.
“What did she mean?” I asked.
Eryx didn’t answer.
He just looked at me.
That same unreadable expression.
And somehow…
That scared me more than anything else.
Because now it was clear—
This wasn’t just about rogues.
Or my heat.
Or even him.
This was bigger.
Much bigger.
And whatever it is, I was right in the middle.
