DANGEROUS INSTINCTS

CHAPTER 8: Lyra's POV I woke up in Eryx's room, right where I slept off last night. Dr. Nolan had stayed for a while to do some extra checks on me, but had ultimately concluded that I was fine for now and told me to have a rest. I still remember the feeling of last night. How my body had burnt with the heat. I'd been crippled by it, almost lost myself to it. All because of him. Eryx. My wolf had responded so strongly to him, to his scent and everything about him. I'd been helpless before him. But Dr. Nolan assured me that the worst had passed. I wouldn't be experiencing any serious flashes like last night. At least, I now had free rein of the palace, to move around and explore. Even from Eryx's room, I could understand that I was in a lavish place. The room extended high above my head, lights shining softly down on me. The furniture was plush, and the bed, his bed, which I had woken up on was huge, easily bigger than anything I had ever seen and softer too. It felt like sleeping on a pillow. I spent some time on the bed, just lying there, half hoping, half dreading that Eryx would walk through the door. But I hadn't seen hide or hair of him since last night. The look in his eyes as I woke up. I could feel them on me, like two lasers boring into my skin. I could feel that he wanted me, and it was definitely obvious that I wanted him. All the tension, I wondered what would happen when it finally exploded. I walked out of the room, taking a self guided tour around the place. My feet led me on, and I simply enjoyed the sights. It seemed everyone was somewhere, as I only saw a few guards and maids around. Suddenly, I felt a little tug on my chest. I frowned slightly, ignoring it and continuing my stroll when I felt it again, a bit harder this time. My wolf stirred within me, nudging my mind in the direction of the tug. It was like a slight pull on my heart, and it was leading me deeper into the house. I followed it, and it guided me through the house to what seemed to be a special part of the palace. The pillars stood high and were lined with a gold paint that glowed in the morning light. At the end of the long hallway were two huge doors, manned by two burly looking guards. I stood behind one of the pillars, away from the guards line of sight. It seemed something important was happening inside the place, but I obviously couldn't stroll down there and demand to enter. As free as I was today, I still remembered that I was more prisoner than guest here. I still didn't know what they planned to do with me. Again, my wolf nudged against my mind. Something important was going on behind that door, and it was telling me that we had to know. But there was no possible way for me to do that. Unless… My wolf had been dormant all my life until now, but I knew what other werewolves were capable of, even in their human forms. Great speed and strength, healing abilities that made them nigh impossible to kill. Advanced senses. Including hearing. But I'd not felt any of those since her wolf had made itself known. I turned inwards, to my wolf. I couldn't make all of it out, just a vague shadow in my head. I reached towards it, trying to accept it, to accept its abilities. Into me I opened my eyes and the world looked and felt different. The morning light almost blinded me before I adjusted to it. I could see the dust dancing in the rays of light, saw a bird dive for prey from a distance, towards an unseen prey. A thumping filled my ears before I realized it was my own heart. I took a few deep breaths, trying to make sense of my new senses. I blocked out most of the other sounds, focusing on the room beyond the door. Voices slid lightly into my ears, but I couldn't hear exactly what they were saying. I tapped into my wolf even more, and soon I was hearing like I was in the room myself. "We must reach a decision soon, fellow Councillors. It does not bode well that we have this problem under our roof marinating." Another voice responded, sounding tired, "We need not rush this. The situation is still premature, there is no reason for us to stress ourselves over this. I vote that we simply let this mature." Another voice piped up. "Mature? We know not of what will happen if we leave this unattended. The girl is here, now we must do something about her." The tired voice came up again, "And what would you do, hm?" There was a loaded silence, then the voice continued. "See? We keep saying we need to do something, but we're not sure if something even needs to be done yet." "And besides, she is Eryx's ward. And we all know what happens when you mess with his property." There was another tense silence, then a feminine voice spoke, "He has been slightly different since her arrival. It is disturbing." "The girl is in heat, and the Beast hungers. There's nothing more to it than that." "You know he hates that name." The tired voice yawned. "It would serve you well, to stop using it." "Where is he, anyway?" At this point, a hand fell on my shoulder and I yelped, fist forming unconsciously and flying towards my assumed attacker. Again, he caught my fist in his palm, like a little bird flying into the hand of a giant. He narrowed his eyes slightly. "You shouldn't be here." His voice was gruff and low, laced with danger. I ignored that, curiosity trumping caution. "They were talking about me in there. Why?" Surprise flashed in his eyes, quick and sharp. He glanced at the tall doors at the end of the hall then back to me. "It seems the little wolf is waking up, hm?" "Answer me." I demanded. And to my surprise, he nodded. "I will. Not here. Let us leave this place." He turned and began walking away. "Aren't they waiting for you?" I called to him, following him from behind. He shrugged, the motion odd on him. It looked like a mountain moving it's peaks. "They can wait. You can't." We got back to my room in silence, and I plopped myself on the bed. He sat on the couch opposite me, eyes boring into me. "Tell me why I'm here." I asked. He loo ked at me for a while longer, then he said, without any tone. "You're here to be executed."
