Nolan dragged Olivia into the Clerk’s office and pushed her into a chair. His voice was like ice. "Divorce!"
"No!" Snapping back to reality, Olivia clung to his arm, pleading. "Honey, please don't divorce me, I beg you... We're childhood sweethearts, you know how much I love you. You're all I have left."
"I don't want a woman who's been with another man!"
Olivia felt like she'd been struck by lightning. ‘Does he think I'm dirty?’
Just then, a woman with long, wavy hair and a mature, alluring air hurried over.
"Nolan, I brought the documents you requested."
Seeing the newcomer, a glimmer of hope flickered within Olivia. "Anna, please talk to Nolan, ask him not to divorce me. You've always been the one to patch things up between us."
Anna Davis and Nolan had attended the same university, and the three of them had been close friends. Whenever Olivia and Nolan quarreled, Anna would always intervene, and shortly after, Nolan would return to appease her. She thought this time would be no different.
Anna's face contorted with a mixture of emotions. "Olivia, even though we're good friends, what you did at the hotel... I can't defend you."
While they were talking, Nolan had already opened the file. "Sign it!"
Glancing at the document, Olivia remembered that before their marriage, Nolan had insisted on drafting a prenuptial agreement, claiming it was for her protection. It stipulated that he would leave with nothing if he cheated during their marriage.
"I won't sign it! I won't!" Olivia shook her head vehemently. "Honey, I'll do anything you ask, just don't divorce me..."
Nolan remained indifferent to her pleas. He even forced her hand, making her sign the document. Then, he addressed the staff member, "We're getting a divorce. Please process the paperwork."
Within two minutes of entering, a divorce certificate was thrust into Olivia's hand.
"Nolan!" Tears streamed down Olivia's face as she watched his retreating figure, cold and resolute. She chased after him, but it was too late. He got into a car with Anna. Had she imagined it, or had Anna just kissed Nolan?
As Olivia stood there, clutching the divorce certificate, her phone rang. It was the hospital.
"Ms. Austen, your grandmother is in critical condition. Please come to the hospital immediately!"
"What?" Olivia wiped away her tears and hailed a taxi to the hospital. After her parents' sudden passing the previous year, her grandmother had been hospitalized due to tuberculosis. It was Nolan who had stayed by her side, offering support during those difficult times. But now...
Rushing into her grandmother's ward, Olivia found her in a worse state than she had been a few days prior, barely clinging to life. As Olivia approached the bed, her grandmother sat up abruptly and slapped her across the face.
"I told you! Nolan is just the adopted son of the Austen family, don't fall in love with him! But you didn't listen! Now look, everything your father built is about to be ruined because of you!"
The slap reopened the healing wound on Olivia's face, fresh blood trickling down her cheek.
"Grandma, The Austen Group is still in my hands." Even if she was leaving with nothing, her shares in The Austen Group wouldn't be affected by the divorce. She was still the largest shareholder.
Furious, her grandmother threw a newspaper at her. "See for yourself!"
Picking up the newspaper, Olivia unfolded it and saw the headline of the financial section: Nolan now owned 63% of the Austen Group's shares, giving him complete control of the company.
Olivia's eyes widened in disbelief. "How did he get so many shares..."
Then it dawned on her. A month after their wedding, Nolan had started asking for her shares, claiming he needed them to restructure the company. Blinded by their marriage, she had readily agreed, believing it was all for their shared future. She had never suspected a thing. But he had exploited her trust and seized control of the Austen Group!
"How could I be so foolish, tricked by a man again and again!" Her grandmother's voice was filled with anger and disappointment.
Suddenly, her grandmother clutched her chest in pain and collapsed back onto the bed.
