Chapter 5 : THE RULE HE BROKE FOR HER

765 Words
St. Arden Academy announced group projects like they were harmless. But nothing at St. Arden was ever harmless. Elara found that out the moment the teacher wrote the assignment on the board: “Literature Analysis: Assigned Partners.” A low wave of groans moved through the class. Elara didn’t react. She had learned by now that reacting rarely changed anything here. The teacher began calling names. Pairs formed one by one. Safe with safe. Popular with popular. Invisible with invisible. Elara stared at her notebook, already expecting the pattern. Until— “Vale and Whitmore.” Her pen stopped. For a second, she thought she had misheard. Then the room reacted. Not loudly. But enough. A few heads turned. A few whispers followed. And Elara felt it again—that shift in the air, like something had been disturbed. Slowly, she looked up. Adrian Vale didn’t look surprised. That was the worst part. He just sat there, expression unreadable, as if this was something he had already seen coming. Or something he had accepted. Elara turned to the teacher. “There’s a mistake.” “No mistake,” the teacher replied. “You’ll be working together.” Liana Cross laughed softly from across the room. Elara heard it. She didn’t look at her. But she felt it. ⸻ After class, people left quickly. Too quickly. Like they wanted to escape the aftermath. Elara stayed behind. So did Adrian. Of course he did. The room emptied until it was just them. And silence. The kind that felt heavier than noise. Elara finally spoke. “You could ask to switch.” Adrian closed his notebook slowly. “And go where?” She hesitated. “Anywhere else.” That made him look at her. Properly this time. “You think I get to move freely?” he asked. Elara frowned. “You’re Adrian Vale.” A pause. Then, almost quietly: “That’s exactly why I don’t.” Silence stretched again. Different now. Less empty. More honest. ⸻ They met in the library after school. It was supposed to be for research. It wasn’t. At first, neither of them spoke. Elara organized notes. Adrian sat opposite her, watching nothing and everything at the same time. Finally, she broke the silence. “You didn’t answer my question,” she said. He didn’t look up. “Which one?” “Why you defended me.” A pause. Long enough to feel intentional. Then Adrian leaned back slightly. “I didn’t defend you,” he said. Elara frowned. “You stood up for me in front of everyone.” “That’s not the same thing.” “Then what is it?” His eyes met hers again. And this time, there was something different in them. Not distance. Not control. Something tired. “I corrected something,” he said. Elara didn’t look away. “And what was wrong?” Adrian hesitated. That alone felt rare. Then he said: “The way they looked at you.” Elara blinked. “That’s not a reason.” “It is to me.” Silence again. But this one wasn’t empty. It was charged. Elara lowered her voice. “You don’t even know me.” A faint pause. Then Adrian said, “I know enough.” “That’s impossible.” “Is it?” That question stayed in the air longer than it should have. ⸻ Outside, the sky darkened. Rain threatened again. Elara gathered her things slowly. “You still haven’t explained Liana,” she said. At the name, Adrian’s expression tightened slightly. “I told you to stay away from her.” “You don’t get to tell me what to do.” A flicker. Almost a smile. Almost. “I know,” he said. That was it. No argument. No control. Just acceptance. Which somehow made it worse. ⸻ As they left the library, they walked in silence. Side by side. Not close. Not far. Just… aware. At the entrance, Elara stopped. “You act like everything has consequences,” she said. Adrian looked ahead. “It does.” “Even this?” A pause. Long. Careful. Then he looked at her. And said: “Especially this.” ⸻ That night, Elara saw something she wasn’t supposed to see. A message slipped under her dorm door. No name. Just a warning again. But this one was different. It didn’t say stay away. It said: “You’re already too close.” And for the first time, Elara wondered if Adrian Vale wasn’t the danger— But the thing he was trying not to become.
