The Future

Katherine was surprised by that as Henry gently stroked her cheek, “I can take you anywhere you want to go beautiful. We can go anywhere you want. Travel, live out of suitcases for a while, find a place, and live life free until we find home. And then we’ll find it wherever we please. Settle and while I’m not a joiner, I’m not anti-social either. We wouldn’t make waves, but we wouldn’t have this insistent nosey neighbor syndrome to deal with.” Heart soaring at the idea of him doing such a thing for her, Katherine thought of the idea of it and loved it instantly. Could see her and him being nomads in love, living like hippies traveling with the wind and looking for the place that screamed home. Only for her heart already to know the truth and not able to lie. “I’ve always wanted to live in Heart Cove. Despite the hunters lately being assholes, it is the safest community and land, and despite how they’ve been acting? My parents aren’t going to be around forever Henry. I’m mad at them now for how hostile they’ve made things but…I can’t just leave them again. Two years gone, and I can see how they’ve aged and if I leave and don’t come back this time?” They’d be gone and she might not be any wiser until it was too late. Even though the two were making her want to pull her hair out, Katherine wasn’t trying to give up entirely. The move to the cottage giving her the space needed, she now felt like they all were just holding their breath for what was next. But in the meantime, she had just wanted her mate to be prepared for the onslaught of s**t about to be hurled their way. Looking at him deep in thought, she asked, “What about you?” Confused, she surprised him gently stroking his chin, “You never told me how you ended up here. I mean I can guess since you’re a skirter without a rank. But…I guess…how do you feel? What do you want?” Henry was surprised she’d asked and it made her smile before she whispered lovingly, “You and I are family, your happiness is my happiness. If you want a pack, I want you to have that. And this is a damn good one.” Henry could admit part of him did want a pack. A true one. One where his role would matter and he’d see himself protecting his fellow wolves and bringing honor to the Foy name. While another part of him feared being connected that way again. Especially with how it ended with his home pack. “I won’t lie and say it wouldn’t be ideal to be a part of this pack. It’s full of good character and moral groundings I can respect. But…the village has now painted me concerned with a lot of things. Not so nice and warm like I thought, and I don’t see a future, a good one, that I can be okay with. I refuse to accept disrespect. Especially against our babies.” Katherine’s smile was back, a sweet, shy, and lovely one as she whispered, “Babies?” Chuckling and shaking his head at how cute she was he thought of the little ones they would produce and smiled more, “Yeah. Especially if we have daughters.” Thoughts of a beautiful little girl in his head, her heart nearly fell out of her mouth, “Daughters?” She looked at him and saw him far away in the gaze as he admitted, “I got used to raising a little girl, I guess. I raised my sister before…” Seeing the pain on his face, Katherine didn’t have to ask and immediately pulled him closer, “I’m sorry.” Nodding jerkily as he blinked hard, Henry wouldn’t cry. Not tonight. He instead willed himself to remember his sister alive and not crushed to death. And prayed she forgave him when they met again after failing her. Until then, he focused on his future with his mate as he whispered, “Yeah, I see us having a daughter. Maybe even two.” His deep words washing over her skin making goosebumps smatter, Katherine’s heart raced as he promised, “And of course I’d defend them if they had any trouble, but I just don’t want them growing up like you did.” Feeling like they were under a microscope and couldn’t be themselves or live their lives as they deemed fit. With Katherine as their mother, Henry was sure they would be bold, fiery, and lovely as she was. But still… “I want them to be happy and confident in themselves, in their choices. I won’t tell them not to date if it’s not their mate because they can still find love and make memories they’ll remember for life. I want them to have that, even it’s not forever and we have to pick up some broken hearts and heal them back together.” Grinning at that, Katherine felt a thousand times better as her mate gently whispered, “A girl’s bed isn’t the only thing she has to offer a man. I won’t raise our daughters in that Victorian mindset. If they are as beautiful and kind and amazing as their mother, I’m almost expecting them to break hearts.” He pushed a blonde lock out of her gaze making her grin as her heart melted. Even as his next words also caused her to worry about something she hadn’t thought about yet. “I just don’t want them growing up in a village that will stifle them, or worse isolate them. It can lead to dangerous consequences.” Like if something tragic, Goddess and Saints forbid, happened to the village and they’d be forgotten. Or even worse, something more devastating happened and instead of being believed, due to preconceived notions, they’d be shunned and disbelieved due to a prejudice that was not only stupid. But archaic and at this point just unwarranted gossip. “I only came back home because I thought my parents had finally chilled out. I’d hoped that they weren’t still upset about everything, but they are.” She swallowed the truth hard, “They hadn’t missed me a drop of the time I was gone because they were too busy being angry with me. And now every time I’m around them, I’m just holding my breath waiting for them to either insult or criticize me. Something I didn’t get much of growing up so now I’m getting it in abundance to make up for lost time.” Another thing that Henry didn’t like. He barely remembered his parents, but they had been good people who had raised him right. Only circumstance and tragedy had taken them from him and his sister too soon. Not sure if Katherine’s set were the kind of people, he wanted their children to be around Henry was surprised when Katherine seemed to read his mind. “I still love my parents even though they hurt me,” She met his eyes sadly, “But if I can’t make things right with them…I won’t let them hurt our family. I promise.” Not the promise of her cutting off her parents, but the promise of her making babies with him made Henry kiss her before promising to be there every step of the way. No matter what came next. A promise that made her grin, before suddenly saying, “Let me tell you something, like…the first time I used a blender and made a milkshake. Jessh, was that a sight.” Grinning at her happily and listening to the cute and albeit funny tale, the pixie and wolf sat cuddling swapping stories that were the same. Light hearted and easy, the got to know each other finally as the world around them buzzed with news like it already knew…
