Leaving Rico’s house was the hardest decision Lina had ever made, but it felt like taking a deep breath after drowning. She walked away with her head held high, holding little Elara’s hand while carrying the weight of her second child in her womb.
"I will not look back," Lina whispered to the wind. "From now on, we rely on ourselves only."
With the help of kind neighbors and her own two hands, she built a small house. It was made of bamboo and nipa, simple and small, but it was hers. No one could shout at her there. No one could steal her food. It was her sanctuary.
Life was grueling, a relentless cycle of dawn-to-dusk labor, but Lina thrived in her independence. She worked harder than ever, taking on any job that would pay. Her beauty, quiet and modest, combined with her reputation for being hardworking and kind, made her stand out. Even though she was a woman with a child and another on the way, she did not lack for attention.
Men came knocking on her door one by one.
Rich men came with envelopes full of cash and sacks of rice. "Marry me, Lina. I will give you everything you need."
Handsome men came with flowers and sweet words. "I love you, Lina. Forget the past."
Old men came promising security. "I will take care of you until I die."
But Lina just smiled politely and shook her head.
"Thank you very much," she would say gently. "But I am happy living alone with my children. I don't need a husband."
(Lina’s POV)
I have been fooled once, she thought bitterly. I gave my heart and it was broken into pieces. I will not trust easily again. Men are all the same.
But there was one man who was different.
His name was Manuel. He was a security guard stationed not far from where she lived. He was about forty years old, making him twenty years her senior, but he carried himself with dignity and strength.
One sunny afternoon, little Elara was playing outside. She saw Manuel walking by in his clean white uniform. Her eyes went wide. In her childish mind, she remembered her biological father, Rico, always wearing white shirts.
"Mother! Mother!" Elara shouted excitedly, running back to Lina and tugging her skirt. "Look! Look over there! That is my father! That man looks like Papa!"
Lina laughed softly and patted her daughter’s head. "No, anak. That is not your father. That is Uncle Manuel."
But Elara was stubborn. Every time she saw Manuel, she would transform into a fierce little tigress. She would puff out her chest, clench her tiny fists, and act as if she was ready to punch him.
"Grrrr!" Elara growled playfully, her face looking serious.
Manuel, being a gentle and humorous man, would laugh and quickly hide behind a coconut tree, peeking out while watching Lina.
"Oh no! The little tiger is angry!" he would joke.
Elara was very smart. She would walk around the tree to catch him looking at her mother. To stop her playful attacks, Manuel would always pull out candies or small treats from his pocket.
"Here, pretty girl. Don't be angry anymore," he would say softly, his voice full of warmth.
Lina watched them from afar. She noticed how kind he was to her daughter, but she said nothing. He will get tired eventually, she thought. Just like the others. He will leave.
But she was wrong. Manuel did not give up. He loved her through actions, silently and steadily.
[ MANUEL’S POINT OF VIEW ]
Manuel was a widower. He had lost his wife many years ago and had no children. His life was empty and quiet for so long. But when he saw Lina, something inside his heart woke up.
She has been through so much pain, Manuel thought as he watched her carry heavy loads. But she still smiles. She is still kind. She is like a diamond hidden in the rough. I want to protect her. I want to be her shield.
He did not want grand declarations. He wanted to love her without pressure.
One day, he went to their neighbor, Aling Nena. He gave her some money.
"Aling Nena, please buy some groceries—rice, canned goods, eggs. Bring them to Aling Lina," Manuel requested softly. "But please don't tell her it came from me. Just say you have extra from your family."
"Sure, Manuel. You are so good to her," Aling Nena smiled, understanding his pure intentions.
Manuel also gathered firewood and stacked them neatly near Lina’s door when she was sleeping. He carried heavy buckets of water for her. He fixed things that were broken. He did everything silently, like a shadow protecting them.
And every day, he would hear the little girl shout, "Father! Father!"
It touched his heart deeply. If only I could really be their father, he wished. I will love them more than my own life.
[ BACK TO LINA ]
One day, Lina could not keep quiet anymore. She saw Manuel helping her again, and she decided to confront him. She approached him while he was on his break under the shade of a tree.
"Manuel," Lina called him, her voice soft but firm.
Manuel stood up straight immediately. He looked a little nervous but happy she was talking to him.
"Yes, Ma'am Lina? Do you need anything?"
"Why are you doing all of this?" Lina asked, looking straight into his eyes. "Why are you helping me secretly? Why do you give my daughter candies every day? And why... why do you always look at me like that?"
Manuel took a deep breath. He knew this was the moment.
"Lina," he started, looking sincere and honest. "I know you have a heavy past. I know you are strong enough to stand alone. But I see how good your heart is. I am a widower. I have no children. My house is empty and quiet."
He stepped closer, looking at her with love. "When I saw you, and when I saw little Elara, I felt something I haven't felt in a long time. I don't want to force you. I just want to take care of you. I want to be a real father to your children. I will treat them as if they came from my own body."
Lina was surprised. She learned that he was twenty years older than her, but he was so responsible and good. For the first time in a long time, she felt safe. She felt that this man would not hurt her.
"Okay," she whispered, her heart beating fast. "Let us try. Give me a chance to know you better. And I will give you a chance to enter our lives."
And so, they became a couple. Love grew slowly but surely. It was not the fiery, reckless passion of her youth, but something warmer, safer, and deeper.
Soon after, Lina gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Manuel was overjoyed! He held the baby like it was the most precious thing in the world, even though he knew the child was not his by blood.
"Let us go to my hometown," Manuel suggested one day, his face full of hope. "We will start a new life there. Away from bad memories. I will take care of you all."
Lina agreed. They moved to Manuel’s province. There, he did something very special that made Lina cry tears of happiness.
He had the baby boy baptized and gave him his own last name, welcoming him completely.
He also had Lina baptized as a Christian, guiding her and uniting their faith completely.
As for Elara? Manuel looked at her and smiled warmly.
"You keep your father's name," he said kindly. "It is part of who you are. It is your history. I will love you just the same, whether you have my name or not. To me, you are my daughter."
Manuel was the best father. He worked harder than ever. He bought them nice clothes, delicious food, and sent them to good schools. He loved them as if they were his own flesh and blood.
For the first time, Lina felt what it was like to be truly cherished.
