Chapter 14
Levonna POV
We had been in Joy’s room far too long. Exhaustion was starting to creep into my bones, heavy and unavoidable. All I wanted was to lie down, to close my eyes for just a moment. I turned toward the door, ready to leave, when suddenly Alpha started crying. A sharp, distressed sound filled the room. Then, Amber cried too. I froze.
“What in the world…?”
Stepping closer to Joy’s bed again, I watched in disbelief as Alpha stretched out his tiny hand, his little fingers trembling in the air. A second later, Amber did the exact same thing, her small hand reaching outward as if she knew exactly where he was. Like they were searching for each other. Like they needed each other.
“There is no way…” I whispered.
Joy looked up at me, her face mirroring my shock.,Neither of us spoke for a moment. I didn’t know what I was expecting, but I needed to see what would happen. Carefully, I leaned down, bringing Amber closer.,The second her tiny hand touched Alpha’s,
Silence. Alpha stopped crying. Amber did too. Just like that.
My breath caught in my throat.
“Listen, little ones,” I said softly, though my voice wavered, “I can’t stay in the same room… I don’t know what this is, but you two are scaring me.”
Joy shifted slightly, still staring at them. “I think they have some kind of connection,” she said quietly. “Alpha seemed like he was in such a hurry to be born… it’s like he wanted to be here before she was.”
I swallowed hard, my mind racing.
“It’s weird. I don’t understand it… but maybe we need to find out what’s going on.”
Neither of us looked away from them.,They were calm now. Peaceful. Their tiny hands still touching, like that was all they needed.
“Well…” I exhaled slowly, trying to steady myself. “I’m going to go to my room. They’re releasing us tomorrow, so we can head home. You should try to get some rest too.”.But even as I said it, I wasn’t sure rest would come easily. Not after what we just witnessed.
I stayed there for a few more minutes than Drago helped me back to my room, I laid in the bed with little Amber, I let her feed than Drago placed her in the little bed beside ours, i laid back closing my eyes, I didn't know how long i was a sleep when i finally opened my eyes, Drago had Amber in his arms trying to calm her down, How long was i actually a sleep,
‘Drago, give her to me, she's probably hungry,” He placed her in my arms, I placed her where she could feed from me, “How long have i been a sleep,”
“You been a sleep for almost a day, the nurses came in to feed her, the doctor said you was exhausted its the reason why your sleeping for so long, im glad your finally awake, our daughter has been missing her mother,”
I chuckled, letting Amber sleep in my arms, then said,
‘I guess she takes after her father already, needy and not very patient,’ I teased softly, glancing up at Drago.
He smirked, shaking his head, ‘Or maybe she just knows where she belongs.’
I looked back down at our little girl, gently brushing my fingers over her tiny cheek as she fed, her small hand curling around my finger. My heart felt so full it almost hurt,
‘I didn’t realize how tired I was,’ I admitted quietly, my voice softer now. ‘But waking up to you two like this… I wouldn’t mind doing it all over again.’
Drago moved closer, sitting on the edge of the bed, his hand resting gently on my leg. ‘You scared me, sleeping that long,’ he said, his voice low but honest. ‘But you needed it. You’ve been through a lot.’
I nodded slightly, my eyes still on Amber. ‘We both have… but she’s worth it.’
Amber made a small sound, shifting slightly in my arms, and I smiled.
‘Yeah,’ Drago murmured, leaning in closer, his eyes soft as he looked at her. ‘She is.’
“I’m right here now,” I whispered softly, brushing my fingers over her tiny cheek as she settled against me. “Mommy’s not going anywhere.”
I looked up at Drago, giving him a small, tired smile. “Almost a whole day? Guess my body really needed it.” I shifted slightly in the bed, careful not to disturb Amber as she fed. “Thank you… for taking care of her while I slept. I know that couldn’t have been easy.”
Amber let out the tiniest sound, already drifting back to sleep, her little hand curling against me. My heart felt so full it almost hurt.
“She’s so small, Drago… and already has you wrapped around her finger,” I teased gently, my voice still soft. “Did she give you a hard time?” I leaned back against the pillows, keeping her close to my chest. “I don’t like the idea of missing even a moment with her… but I guess I needed the rest.”
Glancing down at Amber again, I pressed a light kiss to her head. “We’re going to have to figure this out together… sleepless nights and all.” I paused, then added with a quiet warmth, “But I wouldn’t trade this for anything.” So, Did Joy find out what's going on with the two babies, why they seemed so attached to each other?” Drago turned away from me so I couldn't see his face, that worried me,
“Drago, Look at me. What's going on?”
He stayed turned away for a moment longer than I liked, his shoulders stiff, his silence saying more than words ever could.
“Drago,” I said softer this time, adjusting Amber gently against me as she finished feeding, “don’t shut me out. What’s going on?”
He let out a slow breath, running a hand through his hair before finally turning back to face me. His eyes were conflicted… worried.
“Joy… she thinks something is going on between Alpha and Amber,” he said carefully. “Not just playmates… not just two babies enjoying each other’s company.”
I frowned, looking down at Amber as she slept peacefully in my arms, completely unaware of the weight of the conversation around her. “What do you mean?” I asked quietly.
Drago hesitated again, like he didn’t even want to say the words out loud.
“She thinks… they might be mates.” The room went completely still.
“Mates?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. “Drago, they’re babies… that’s not possible.”
“I know,” he said quickly, stepping closer, lowering his voice so it wouldn’t wake her. “I said the same thing. But Joy’s been watching them… the way Alpha reacts when Amber cries, the way she calms the second he’s near… it’s not normal.”
My heart started to pound, my grip tightening protectively around my daughter.
“No,” I shook my head, “she’s too little. She shouldn’t have to deal with something like that already.”
“I agree,” Drago said firmly, kneeling beside the bed now, his hand resting gently on Amber’s back. “And even if it’s true… nothing changes right now. She’s our daughter first. She gets to be a child.”
I swallowed hard, nodding slowly, but something about this didn’t sit right with me.
“Is that all?” I asked, studying his face closely. “Because you don’t look like that’s all.”
His jaw tightened. “There’s more,” he admitted. A cold feeling settled in my chest.
“Then tell me,” I whispered. He glanced at Amber… then back at me.
“Joy thinks this might be why she shifted early.”
Before I could even respond, there was a soft knock at the door. Drago and I both looked toward it, his body instantly going tense. “Come in,” he called, his voice guarded. The door opened slowly, and Joy stepped inside, Randy right behind her. Her eyes immediately went to Amber in my arms, softening for just a second before that seriousness took over again.
“I figured she’d be awake by now,” Joy said quietly, closing the door behind her.
I shifted slightly in the bed, holding Amber closer without even realizing it. “Then you already know we were talking about you,” I said, my tone not harsh… but not exactly welcoming either. “You think our daughter has a mate.”
Joy didn’t flinch. “I don’t think,” she said gently, stepping closer. “I know something is happening. I just don’t fully understand it yet.”
Drago moved to stand beside me, his presence solid and protective. “Then explain what you do know,” he said firmly.
Joy nodded, glancing at Randy for a moment before looking back at us.
“I’ve been watching Alpha and Amber since the first day,” she started. “At first, I thought it was just a connection, something innocent. But it’s more than that.”
She took another step closer, lowering her voice. “Alpha reacts to Amber like a fully grown wolf reacts to their mate. He gets restless when she’s not around, he calms instantly when she is, and when she cried earlier…” Joy paused, her expression tightening, “he tried to shift.” My breath caught. “He’s just a child,” I whispered.
“I know,” Joy said softly. “That’s what makes this so unnatural.” Randy finally spoke up from behind her, his voice steady but serious.
“We’ve never seen anything like this before. Not this young. Not this strong.”
I looked down at Amber, brushing my fingers lightly over her tiny head, my heart aching. “And her?” I asked. “What about Amber?”
Joy’s gaze softened again as she looked at her. “She responds to him too,” she said. “Her dragon… it’s aware of him. That early? I don’t think it was random.”
Drago’s hand tightened into a fist at his side. “You’re saying this bond is going to force her to shift?” he asked, anger creeping into his voice.
“I’m saying,” Joy replied carefully, “that whatever is between them… it’s powerful enough to break rules we thought couldn’t be broken.” Silence filled the room again.
I shook my head slowly, tears burning in my eyes. “She’s just a baby,” I said, my voice breaking this time. “She should be worrying about nothing… not fate, not bonds… not any of this.”
Joy stepped closer to the bed, her voice soft but firm. “And she will,” she promised. “We’re not going to let this take her childhood away. Whatever this is… we control how and when it affects them.”
Drago looked at her sharply. “And if we can’t?” he challenged.
Joy met his gaze without hesitation. “Then we learn everything we can,” she said. “Because if this is what I think it is… hiding from it won’t protect them.”
I held Amber tighter, pressing a soft kiss to her head as she slept peacefully, completely unaware of the storm forming around her. “What do you think it is?” I asked quietly. Joy hesitated… just for a second. Then she said the words that made my heart drop.“A destined bond… tied to both dragons.”
