Chapter 59

I jumped out the window, shifting into my dragon midair. My wings burst open as I took flight, searching for him. Five minutes later, I spotted him below, running hard. At that pace, it would take him an hour to reach the castle. It's not happening. I swooped down, grabbing him carefully in my talons. He immediately started screaming, thrashing wildly.

“Put me down!”

He knew it was me. He fought the entire way back, but I couldn’t let him go there. It wasn’t safe. If they found out whose child he was, he’d never be safe again. The moment we reached the house, I released him and quickly shifted back into my human form.

“You can’t stop me forever, Mother!” Court shouted. “What you’re doing is wrong. You’re spying on a twelve-year-old child, for what? Revenge? Over something that happened before I was even born?”

I hurried to get dressed, my hands shaking slightly.

“Court, you don’t understand. Maybe you don’t want to understand. I’m doing this for us. I am doing.”

He cut me off. “This is all bullshit,” he snapped. “You wanted the king, and you’re jealous because he has a wife and a child. You wanted him..and you can’t have him.”

I froze. Did he really just say that? There was no way. No way, I would ever want someone who killed his father. The words slipped out before I could stop them.

“They killed your father, Court. My husband. Your father. They killed him for no reason at all. Yeah, he wasn’t a good man, so what? That doesn’t give them the right to kill him!”

Silence fell. Court just stood there, staring at me, his mouth slightly open. I hadn’t planned to tell him. I was going to handle this myself, take their daughter, make them suffer, break her until she didn’t even remember who she was. But he pushed me.. And now he knew.

“They… did what?” he whispered. “Why? What did he do that was so bad? Does she know? Does Amber know, Mom?”

I shook my head. “She wasn’t even born yet. Neither were you. That’s why you’ve never seen your father… "because they took him from us.” I stepped closer, my voice dropping.“And if they find out who you are, Court… you won’t be safe either.”
