Chapter 55
Wyatt POV
This is a terrible idea. “I just want that on record,” I whispered as we crouched in a tree this time. “A terrible, horrible, absolutely bad idea.”
Katy rolled her eyes from the branch above me. “Then why are you here?”
“Because I like money.”
“Shocking,” she muttered.
Wanda, of course, said nothing. She was focused again, watching the castle like some kind of professional. Which was weird… because we are not professionals. We took Lady’s advice. Stayed farther back. Way farther. No bushes this time. No obvious hiding spots. Just distance. And honestly? It was working.
“I told you,” Katy whispered. “We just needed space.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I muttered. “Genius plan. Totally safe. Nothing could possibly go wrong…”
“Stop talking,” both girls said at the same time.
Rude.
The gates opened again. Showtime. “There,” Wanda said softly.
The princess stepped out again, same as before. But this time…
Something felt different.
“I don’t like this,” I whispered.
“No one asked,” Katy said.
But even she sounded unsure. The princess walked with the same boy again, laughing like yesterday never happened. Like she didn’t almost catch us. “See?” I whispered. “She forgot.”
Wanda didn’t respond. That should’ve been my first warning. We followed again. Carefully. Quietly. No talking. No messing around.
“”Okay, less messing around.”” Everything was going perfectly.
Too perfectly. “She hasn’t looked around once,” Katy whispered.
“Because she doesn’t know,” I said confidently.
Wanda finally spoke. “…Or she does.”
I frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“She’s acting the same on purpose.”
A slow chill crawled up my spine. “…You think she’s pretending?”
No answer. Great, Love that. They stopped at the market. People everywhere. Crowds. Noise. Perfect cover.
“Okay,” Katy said, “this is good. We blend in.”
Finally. Something normal. We split up slightly, keeping distance but staying in sight. I leaned casually against a stall, pretending to look at fruit. I am a natural at this. Then it happened. The boy suddenly left her side.
“Where’s he going?” I muttered.
Katy, across the way, shrugged slightly. Wanda’s eyes narrowed.
“Something’s wrong.”
Yeah… I was starting to get that feeling too. The princess stayed where she was. Alone. Just… standing there. Waiting.
“…This is weird,” I whispered.
“No kidding,” Katy said.
Wanda shifted slightly in her position. “Don’t move.”
“I wasn’t moving!”
“Good. Keep it that way.”
Then…. “She’s gone.”
I blinked. “…What?”
I looked again. The princess was gone. Just like that. No walking away. No turning. No warning. Gone.
“WHERE DID SHE GO?!” I hissed.
“Shut up!” Katy snapped.
“I’M NOT SEEING HER!”
“Neither am I!”
Wanda stood up slightly on her branch, scanning fast now. “…She didn’t leave,” she said.
My stomach dropped. “What do you mean she didn’t leave?! She’s not there!”
“That’s the problem.” A voice spoke behind me. “You’re not very good at this.”
I froze. Slowly… Very slowly… I turned around. And there she was.
The princess. Standing right behind me. Smiling. My soul left my body.
“Hi,” she said sweetly.
I screamed. Not proud of that.
“WYATT!” Katy whisper-yelled from across the market.
“DON’T YELL!” I whisper-screamed back.
“YOU’RE LITERALLY SCREAMING!”
“BECAUSE SHE’S RIGHT HERE!”
The princess tilted her head, amused. “You talk a lot,” she said.
I blinked.
“…You’re not supposed to be behind me.”
She smiled wider. “You’re not supposed to be following me.”
Oh. Oh no. Suddenly, Katy and Wanda were there, closing in but trying not to make a scene.
“Hey,” Katy said casually. “Funny running into you.”
“Is it?” the princess asked.
Wanda stepped slightly in front of us. “We’re just passing through.”
The princess looked at all three of us. One by one. Like she was reading us.
“You’ve been following me since yesterday,” she said calmly.
No fear. No panic. Just… fact. I swallowed hard.
“Okay,” I said. “Before anything crazy happens, ”
“Too late,” Katy muttered.
“we’re going to leave now.”
“Good idea,” Wanda added.
We turned.,Ready to walk away. Nice. Easy. Normal.
“Guards!”
We froze.,Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me. The princess didn’t yell it. She didn’t need to. Two guards were already pushing through the crowd. Fast. “RUN,” Katy snapped. We ran. Chaos. People shouting. Stalls getting knocked over. Me tripping over absolutely nothing. “WHY IS THIS ALWAYS HAPPENING TO US?!” I yelled.
“BECAUSE YOU EXIST!” Katy shouted back.
RUDE. We split up. No plan. Just survival. I ducked down an alley, heart pounding. Footsteps behind me. “NOPE,” I muttered, running faster. Eventually… Somehow…We lost them. Hours later…Back at the pub. Again. Breathing hard. Again. Katy slammed her hands on the table. “That went worse!” Wanda nodded slightly.
“She didn’t just sense us this time,” she said. “She played us.”
I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling. “…She teleported.”
“She did not teleport,” Katy snapped.
“Then explain how she got behind me!” No answer. Exactly.
Wanda looked at both of us. “This is bigger than we thought.”
Katy nodded slowly.,“Yeah… way bigger.”
I swallowed.,“…Are we still doing this job?”
They both looked at me. Then at each other. Then back at me.
“…We’re already in too deep,” Katy said. Wanda nodded.
,I sighed. “Cool,” I muttered. “Cool, cool, cool…”,We’re going to die.
