Chapter 79
Amber POV
The air changed first..Not gradually. Not subtly. It snapped.
A pressure dropped over the entire pack like the sky itself had fallen. Every Dragon froze. Every breath held. Even the wind stopped moving.
Ripley pulled me closer instantly. “Stay behind me.”
But I was already staring at the tree line. Because I felt it.
The demon. He wasn’t far anymore. He was here. And then
The attack hit. A shockwave of dark energy slammed into the outer edge of the pack lands. Trees cracked. The ground split. Warriors were thrown backward like they weighed nothing. Screams erupted.
Chaos followed. “DEFEND THE PACK!” Ripley roared.
Instantly, Dragons shifted. Dragons in the distance answered the call.
But I couldn’t move. Because Fenrya wasn’t afraid. She was… excited.
“Finally,” she whispered inside me.
“No,” I hissed internally. “Not like this.”
But it was too late. Another wave hit. Harder. Closer.
Ripley POV
Everything turned into instinct. Training. Survival. War.
I shoved Amber behind me as the first wave of attackers broke through the outer forest line, twisted shadow-beings, not fully formed, not fully alive. Rogue magic. Demon magic.
“Hold the line!” I barked.
My warriors engaged instantly. But my focus kept snapping back to her. Amber wasn’t behind me anymore.
She was staring at the battlefield like she was hearing something no one else could.
“Amber!” I reached for her arm.
She didn’t respond. Her eyes flickered white.
“Amber, stay with me!”
Amber POV
The moment I stepped forward… I felt it.
Everything. Every heartbeat. Every fear.
Every weakness. It all poured into me like an open flood.
And I understood something terrifying. I could feel them.
Not just allies. Enemies too. I lifted my hand slightly without thinking.
A rogue lunged toward a warrior.
“No,” I said softly.
The word wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. The air shifted.
The rogue froze mid-motion, slammed into the ground like an invisible force crushed him. Silence cut through the battlefield for half a second. I blinked.
“What… did I just do?”
Fenrya purred inside me.
“Control.”
Ripley saw it. His expression changed instantly. “Amber…don’T..”
But it was already happening. Another rogue charged. My hand lifted again.
“Stop.”
The ground obeyed. The rogue was thrown back so violently he crashed through three trees. Gasps echoed across the pack.
I staggered slightly.
“That’s not me,” I whispered.
“Yes it is,” Fenrya said calmly.
Ripley grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to face him.
“Amber, you need to stop using that power right now.”
I pulled back. “They’re attacking us!”
“And you don’t understand what you’re doing!” he snapped, louder
than he intended. That hit harder than the attack. My chest tightened.
“I’m helping,” I said sharply.
“You’re losing control!”
That word. Losing. Something inside me cracked. The air around us surged violently. Ripley’s dragons and wolves stumbled back.
Even warriors nearby froze.
“I am NOT losing control,” I said, voice lower now.
Dangerously calm. And without meaning to. my command slipped out.
“Everyone… stop.”
The battlefield went silent. Not just our side. The enemies too.
Every wolf within range froze mid-motion. Even Ripley.
His eyes widened. “Amber… what did you just do?”
I stared at him. At all of them. Frozen. Obeying. And realization hit me like ice.
“I didn’t mean to,” I whispered.
Fenrya’s voice echoed proudly. “You did exactly what you are.”
Ripley POV
Panic hit me harder than the demon attack. Not because she was dangerous. But because she didn’t understand it yet.
And she was stronger than all of us combined. I stepped forward slowly, carefully.
“Amber,” I said softer now. “Look at me.”
Her eyes flickered. Confusion. Fear. Power.
“I didn’t want that,” she said quietly.
“I know.”
But I didn’t know what came next. Because if she lost control again,
we wouldn’t just lose a fight. We could lose everything.
Amber POV
I took a step back. Then another. The frozen battlefield stayed locked in place behind me.
“I can’t stay here,” I whispered.
Ripley’s face hardened instantly. “No.”
I looked at him sharply. “You can’t protect me from this.”
“I can try!”
“That’s the problem!” I snapped.
Silence. Even Fenrya went quiet for a second. Ripley stepped closer, voice low, desperate now.
“You think leaving fixes anything?”
“I think staying makes it worse,” I shot back.
My hands trembled slightly. “I don’t know what I am anymore.”
That one was quieter. Honest. It landed heavy between us.
Ripley’s expression shifted. Pain. Frustration. Love. And fear.
“You’re my mate,” he said firmly. “That’s what you are to me.”
My throat tightened.
“But I’m not just that,” I whispered.
A beat.
Then, I turned away. And for the first time… I walked forward into the battlefield alone.
Ripley POV
“No, Amber!” I moved to follow her,
But the frozen air snapped back the moment she stepped forward.
Chaos resumed instantly. Warriors clashed. Magic erupted.
And she stood in the middle of it all. Not fighting. Not running.
Just… changing. And I realized something I didn’t want to admit.
I couldn’t protect her anymore. Not from the enemy. Not from herself.
Amber POV
I stood in the center of war. And for the first time…
I stopped fighting what I was. Fenrya’s voice softened.
“Now you see.”
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t want to hurt them,” I whispered.
Then don’t, she said.
“Then how do I control this?”
A pause. Then her answer came.
You don’t control power like this.
My eyes opened. The battlefield burned around me.
“You become it.” everything changed.
