Chapter 53
Wyatt POV
This is the best job ever. “Guys… we’re spying on a princess,” I whispered loudly, grinning like an i***t as we crouched behind a bush.,Katy smacked the back of my head.
“Stop saying it out loud, you moron! Do you want us to get caught?”
Wanda didn’t say anything, she was focused, eyes locked on the castle gates like she actually knew what she was doing. Show off.
“I’m just saying,” I muttered, rubbing my head, “this is important work. My girlfriend says..”
“She’s not real,” Katy cut in instantly.
“She is real! She’s right here!” I pointed to the empty space beside me.
Katy slowly turned to Wanda. “I’m going to kill him.”
“After the job,” Wanda said calmly.
Wow. Rude. We had been watching the castle for hours. Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.,Just guards walking back and forth, switching shifts, being all… guard-like.
“This is boring,” I groaned. “When does the princess come out? Doesn't she have, like… princess things to do?”
“Shut up,” Wanda said quietly.
That’s when it happened. The gates opened. All three of us froze.
“Movement,” Wanda whispered.
Okay… now this was exciting.,A small group stepped out, guards first, obviously. Then… there she was.,The princess.
“She’s just a kid,” Katy muttered.
Yeah… she was. About twelve, like Lady said. But she didn’t act all snobby like I expected. She looked… normal. Talking, smiling, walking beside another kid, looked like a boy, the same age.
“Is that the one?” I whispered.
“Has to be,” Wanda replied. “Stay low.”
We ducked further behind the bushes as they walked past the gates and headed down the path toward town.
“Alright,” Katy said. “We follow, but not too close.”
Following people is harder than it looks. Especially when Wyatt (me) is involved.
“I think she saw me,” I whispered.
“She didn’t see you,” Katy hissed.
“She totally saw me.”
“You’re behind a tree.”
“She could feel me.”
Wanda stopped walking. “If you don’t shut up,” she said calmly, “I will personally leave you here and tell Lady you got caught.”
I zipped my mouth shut. We trailed them all the way into town.
The princess and the boy, her friend, I guess, went from place to place, laughing, talking, just… being kids.
“She’s not doing anything important,” I whispered. “We’re spying on… normal.”
“That’s the point,” Wanda said. “Lady wants everything.”
So we watched.,And watched.,And watched. Until something changed.,The princess suddenly stopped walking. My heart dropped.
“Why did she stop?” I whispered.
“No idea,” Katy said.
The boy beside her looked confused too. Then… She turned. Not all the way, but enough. Her eyes scanned the area. And for a split second… I swear she looked right at us.
“Uh…” I froze. “Guys…”
“Don’t move,” Wanda whispered.
“I think she sees us.”
“She doesn’t see us.”
“She definitely sees us.”
The princess tilted her head slightly… like she was listening to something. Then she leaned closer to the boy and whispered something to him. He stiffened immediately.
“That’s not good,” Katy muttered.
“Nope. Definitely not good,” I agreed.
The boy nodded, grabbing her hand. And then, They started walking again. Fast.
“Uh… why are they walking faster?” I whispered.
“Because,” Wanda said slowly, “they know.”
My eyes widened. “They know?!”
“Move,” Katy snapped.
We followed, but now it wasn’t just following.
It was chasing. Not close enough to be obvious… but not far enough to lose them.
“They’re heading back,” Wanda said. “Castle.”
“They’re not even pretending to be normal anymore,” Katy added.
“Guys,” I said nervously, “what if we messed up?”
“You definitely messed up,” Katy shot back.
“I didn’t do anything!”
“You exist loudly!” Rude.
By the time they reached the castle gates, the guards were already on alert. That’s when I knew, Yeah. We messed up. Big time. The princess turned one last time before entering the gates.
And this time… There was no doubt. She was looking straight at us.
“...She sees us,” I whispered.
“Yeah,” Wanda said quietly.
The gates shut.,Guards started scanning the area.
“Time to go,” Katy said.
We didn’t argue.,We ran. Hours later, we were back at the pub.
Out of breath. Sweaty. Slightly traumatized.
“Well,” I said, leaning back in the booth, “that could’ve gone better.”
Katy glared at me. “You think?!”
Wanda stayed quiet for a moment before speaking.
“She knew,” she said. “Not just that we were there… she felt us.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“...That’s not normal, is it?” I asked.
“No,” Wanda replied.
Katy leaned forward. “Lady didn’t tell us everything.”
No… She definitely didn’t. And something tells me, This job just got a whole lot more dangerous.
