Chapter 25
Levonna POV
I stood there, staring at my daughter in complete shock. She shifted… so young." That wasn’t supposed to happen, not like this, not this early. Drago had asked Nxy if it hurt her to shift so soon, but when she looked at us with those wide, worried eyes and asked if we were mad at her, my heart shattered. How could anyone be mad at her? She was just a child. And when she shifted back into Amber… fully clothed, unharmed, it only confirmed what we already feared. Her dragon was powerful. Too powerful for her age.
“Daddy…" Did I do something bad?”
Drago immediately dropped to his knees beside her, pulling her into his arms without hesitation.
“Of course not, honey. Everything is okay, baby,” he reassured softly, holding her close.
Across the room, Joy moved toward Alpha, kneeling down in front of him. We hadn’t expected him to say anything. He rarely spoke. but today was different.
“Alpha, baby, did you get hurt? Did you see everything that happened?”
He looked up at her, calm but serious. “No, Mommy… I didn’t get hurt. I saw all of it. It happened so fast. First, we were just playing with blocks… Then there she was. It's all pretty and big.” He paused, his little brows pulling together. “She told me not to be scared… but I wanted to protect her. I didn’t want anyone to hurt the pretty dragon.”
My chest tightened at his words. Joy gently pulled him into a hug. “Don’t worry, honey. No one is going to hurt the pretty dragon. But we need to keep this between us, okay? No one else can know.”
“Okay, Mommy,” he said quietly. She stood, holding Alpha in her arms.
“Well… it’s been a long day. I think we should head home. What happened here, Amber shifting, it has to stay between us. If the wrong people find out…” Her voice trailed off, but we all understood the danger.
We walked them to the door and watched as they left. The house felt quieter… heavier. I carried Amber into the living room, holding her tightly against me. I didn’t want to let her go, not after what just happened. Not after seeing just how fragile and powerful she truly was.
“Honey, she’s not going anywhere,” Drago said gently. “You can sit her down.”
I let out a soft chuckle and adjusted her so she was sitting in my lap. She yawned, long and heavy, her little body already giving in to exhaustion. Shifting must have taken so much out of her.
I wondered if she even understood what had happened. If she remembered it… or if it was all just instinct. I hoped, prayed, and it would only happen this once. We had told Nxy she couldn’t shift again until she was older. There were too many risks, too many eyes in the world. If anyone saw… she would truly be in danger. Drago sat beside me and gently took Amber into his arms, cradling her like she was made of glass. Within minutes, she was barely awake.
By the time he carried her to her room and laid her down, she was already fast asleep. We stood there for a while, just watching her. Listening to her soft breathing. Making sure she was really okay.
Eventually, we made our way back to our room.
“Do you think she’ll remember any of this tomorrow?” Drago asked quietly, his eyes lingering on the door, like he wanted to go back to her. I felt the same pull.
“I don’t know, honey… I really don’t,” I admitted softly. “But if she does… we’ll deal with it.” Even as I said it, unease settled deep in my chest. Because something told me… "This wasn’t the last time."
