Chapter 27
Drago POV
The moment Amber said her dragon spoke to her… something inside me went still. Completely still. That wasn’t normal.
Not for someone her age. Not even close. I kept my face calm, controlled, because the last thing I wanted was to scare her, but inside, my mind was already racing through every possibility, every danger, every story I had ever heard. And none of them ended simply.
“What did she say?” I asked her, keeping my voice steady.
“She told me not to be scared… and she wasn’t scared either.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Of course she wasn’t. A dragon like that… wouldn’t be.
Amber looked up at us again, her small voice soft but certain.
“I think she’s still here.”
Levonna and I exchanged a look, and in that moment, we both understood the same thing without saying a word. This wasn’t just an early shift. This was something more. Something rare.
Something dangerous. I pulled Amber back into my arms, holding her close, grounding both her and myself.
“You listen to me, baby,” I said quietly. “No matter what you feel, no matter what you hear… you tell Mommy and Daddy, okay? Always.”
She nodded against me. “Okay, Daddy.”
I kissed the top of her head, then gently set her down.
“Why don’t you go eat some breakfast?” Levonna said softly, guiding her toward the table.
Amber walked over, but I could see it, the way she moved, the way she looked around.,More aware. More… present. I waited until she was distracted before I turned to Levonna, lowering my voice. “This isn’t normal,” I said.
“I know,” she whispered back.
“She’s not just shifting early. Her dragon is… awake. Fully aware.”
Levonna’s face paled slightly. “Drago…”
“I’ve heard of this before,” I continued, my jaw tightening. “Not seen it, but heard of it. Dragons that don’t sleep inside their hosts. Dragons that are conscious… from the beginning.”
“And that means?” she asked, even though I knew she already feared the answer.
“It means power,” I said bluntly. “More than she should have at her age. And if anyone else senses it…” I didn’t finish.
I didn’t have to. They would come. Not just rogues. Alphas.
Hunters. Things that are worse than both.
Levonna wrapped her arms around herself. “We can keep her safe.”
“I will keep her safe,” I corrected, my voice low and firm. “No matter what it takes.”
Before she could respond, A sharp pressure hit my chest. I froze.
My dragon stirred instantly, alert, on edge. “”You feel that?””
“I do,” I muttered under my breath.
Levonna looked at me. “What is it?”
I turned slowly toward the window, my eyes narrowing. Someone… felt that. Not here. But close enough. presence. Faint, but searching. Like something brushing against the edges of our territory.
“They know,” I said quietly.
Levonna’s breath hitched. “No… that’s not possible.”
“It is,” I replied, my voice turning cold. “Maybe not who she is… not yet. But they felt something. Power like that doesn’t just go unnoticed.”
Behind us, Amber laughed softly at something, completely unaware.
I clenched my fists. Too young. She was too young for this.
“Get the guards doubled,” I said immediately. “No one gets in or out without me knowing. And no one, no one, talks about what happened yesterday.” Levonna nodded quickly.
“I’ll mindlink Joy. She needs to know.”
I gave a sharp nod. “I’m going to check the borders.”
“You just got back,”
“I don’t care,” I cut in, already moving toward the door. “If something is out there, I’m not waiting for it to come to us.”
Before I left, I turned back one last time. Amber was sitting at the table, swinging her little legs, eating like nothing in the world had changed. But everything had. And I could feel it deep in my bones. Something had awakened. And now… Something else was coming.
