Chapter 4

1230 Words
Lana and Andre got to the pack already. The people were already making preparations for the rising of the red moon tonight. Some cubs would wolf out tonight, some would find their mates tonight, and some would be merely spectators tonight. Both Lana and Andre watched from a distance as the people excitedly prepared for the night. The ones who were expecting themselves to wolf out tonight were the most excited. Andre, who was also conceited with excitement, watched the others eagerly. “Lana, I really can’t wait for tonight. I’m going to turn to a full werewolf tonight. I might also get to find my mate.” Andre said, his sea blue eyes glistening with excitement. Lana chuckled at what he said, “Your mate? I think it’s still too early for you to discover and be connected with your mate.” “Well, who knows…? I could be the first and be different.” He said and chuckled before he continued, “I’m pretty sure tonight is going to be your night. I just feel this sort of conviction within me that you’re going to turn into a werewolf tonight. What’s baffling me is that I’m having this urge that is prompting me to tell you.” “Well then, are you now a seer?” Lana asked. “I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what it means because my mother was a seer before she died. She got the power from her grandmother, who is my great-grandmother. My grandmother told me that my mother died because of a revelation she had about a particular pack. They killed her. Then, I was still 2” he said and sighed. “Sorry about that. Well, your mother would be so glad seeing you follow her footsteps and still being a werewolf. I’m sure she’s so proud of you, Andre.” Lana said and patted him gently on his back. “Let’s go home Lana. Grandmother would be so worried now.” Andre said. “No, she wouldn’t. Her power gives her ability to sense if one of her close one is dead, if within her pack. I’m sure she knows you survived the poison. Nevertheless, let’s go home still.” Lana said and started walking. Andre followed her closely till they got back home. As soon as they got back home, they found Ma Fie seated quietly on the sofa. She was a troublesome woman and Lana was ready for whatsoever she was going to say. She wasn’t expecting anything good from her. “What took you so long, Lana? Where did you go to with my grandson?” Lana sighed before speaking up, “Ma, we went to the healer. The healer healed him and then we started coming back home immediately. It only seemed so long to you, and I do not know why.” “Just get out of my sight Lana, and you, Andre, come over here.” Ma Fie said. Lana bowed slightly and left immediately. Andre went over to Ma Fie and she took him to a room to prepare him for the rising of the red moon festival happening that night. Meanwhile, Lana went to the basement - where she stayed and her room was located - and started pondering on what Andre had told her. “Could it be that it’s going to happen tonight? What I’ve been waiting for, for a long time now is finally here and I literally do not know how to feel or react…” she thought, “I do not want to get my hopes so high and end up getting it dashed. It might just be a wish from him and nothing more, but I hope it comes true. Oh mother…” She stood up from her bed which she was sitting on earlier, and went to her closet to get changed into the traditional outfit meant for a festival and occasion like this one. She started feeling a surge of excitement within her. She giggled at herself. After getting dressed, she went up to the main house to help around, just in case she was needed or sought after. *** It was 10 o’clock. The mighty bell which hung in the center of the Oppo pack’s territory was rung by a heavily built werewolf in his man-like form. The ringing of the bell at that season and time meant only one thing – it was time for the festival of the rising of the red moon. The once majestic creamy-white moon was now slowing fading away, now birthing a gigantic bloody red moon. All the cubs – those who haven’t transformed to their werewolf form before were called this – came out and lined up on a single file. They were the only ones in a human-like form, as all the rest of the pack changed into their werewolves. The cubs wore their traditional outfits and stood in front of a large statue of an ancient werewolf, which they believed birthed them all in the pack. They were all told to chant a recitation the moment the howling began. Lana wasn’t allowed to join the procession because she wasn’t a member of their pack. They all considered her an outcast and nothing but a slave. She was even sent out of the territory for the while according to their tradition which stated that anyone who is not a rightful member of the pack should be sent out for a while during the festival of the rising of the red moon. She was aware of this, so she didn’t feel bad about it. She wandered aimlessly around the valley demarcating the Oppo pack from the Clad pack. Soon, she started hearing the howls from the pack. “They must have started. I’m sure Andre must have transformed.” She said and sat quietly on a rock. As she was murmuring inaudible words to herself, she heard the snapping of branches behind her. Fear gripped her but she refused to look back. “Good riddance to my useless life” was what came to her mind. Why was she always wishing death for herself? She wondered. She heard the branches snapping and a quiet howl. “Did a new werewolf escape from the pack?” she thought as she sat, still trying to suppress the fear in her and her instincts telling her to get up and run. She lowered her gaze and tried to look back but she felt a push and before she knew it, she was thrown across the floor and was scratched by her side. It was then she got a good look at what was snapping branches behind her. It was a full-grown werewolf. The size made her very scared. She hadn’t seen a werewolf as big as this. It had bright golden eyes, the gaze piercing through her heart. She felt her heart beat faster than normal and her neck starting to hurt her. She tried to stand but then she staggered and fell. Her bones started snapping and she let out a howl! “Is it happening already? Am I wolfing out?” was the thought that crossed her mind. She looked up and saw the werewolf looking interestingly at her as she transformed. But this was not interesting. She was in great pain as her bones elongated.
