I looked away.
"We weren't exactly close at first."
"But after we found out we were mates..."
A small smile touched my lips.
A genuine one.
The first in a long time.
"For a while, things felt better."
The smile disappeared quickly.
"He promised me he would fix everything."
Killian remained silent.
So I continued.
"He was leaving for Alpha training."
"But before he left, he promised he would come back."
"He said he'd investigate."
"He said he'd prove my father was innocent."
"He said he'd get him released."
I swallowed.
"He promised."
The last word came out quieter than the rest.
Killian watched me carefully.
"You believed him."
