The detectives sat around Watters desk with mugs of tea in front of them. “That’s an unexpected development,” Watters said. “Young Andy thinks that Hitchins, the manservant or butler, is the man who tried to abduct him.”
Duff wrapped his fingers around his mug. “That’s a step forward,” he said. “Unfortunately, we can’t just arrest Hitchins on the word of a street urchin. No jury or judge would accept Andy’s word against that of Hitchins.”
“You’re right,” Watters said.
“Snodgrass must send out Hitchins to do his dirty work,” Scuddamore said.
