Chapter 1

657 Words
When Joy Quinn was four months pregnant, her husband Cedric Shaw brought home a woman who was seven months along. "JoJo, Wendy is the wife of a brother I owed my life to. He just passed away, leaving her and the baby with no one. I just couldn't turn them away. Don't worry—it's only for a little while, just until she finds her own place." Soft-hearted as she was, Joy agreed. She never expected that "a little while" would stretch into two full months. At first, she didn't think much of it. Until one night, when she got up and stumbled upon a scene that left her speechless. Her husband Cedric, and his brother's wife, together by the window. The sight turned every drop of blood in her veins to ice. She stood outside that door for three hours. Inside, the two of them went at it three times. Watching Cedric's face twist with pleasure, again and again, Joy felt her heart being carved open with a knife. He hadn't laid a finger on her since she got pregnant—said he was afraid of hurting the baby. And yet Wendy was nine months pregnant, and they still managed to go three rounds. By the time Cedric was done, it was five in the morning. A faint light was creeping across the sky. The woman wouldn't let him leave, clinging to him in bed. "Ceddy, you were amazing. So much better than my dead husband ever was. Thank you for giving me such a wonderful time." "You weren't bad yourself. Way more uninhibited than JoJo." "Heh." Tears streamed down Joy's face. She couldn't help but let out a bitter scoff—and Cedric heard it. His gaze snapped toward where she stood. Wendy gasped and scrambled to cover herself. "Oh my, it's Joy! She must have gotten the wrong idea. Ceddy, quick, go explain things to her!" Cedric threw on a bathrobe and stepped out. The moment he saw her tear-streaked face, his brows furrowed sharply. "It's the middle of the night. Why aren't you in bed? What are you doing here?" Joy stared at him in disbelief, her voice trembling. "That's what I should be asking you, Cedric. I'm still carrying your child, and you sneak off to sleep with another woman while I'm asleep. Have you no shame?" "JoJo, don't overthink this. Wendy's husband is gone. She hasn't had any intimacy in a long time. I was just doing her a favor. What's the big deal? You're my wife. You always will be. Come on, don't be upset. Think about the baby." "He's right, Joy. Don't worry. What Ceddy and I have is purely physical, nothing more. I swear it won't affect your life together. As long as he's willing to look after me and my child, I'm more than content." Wendy emerged in her nightgown. "Really, I would never try to take him from you. I know you're the one he truly loves." The hickeys scattered across Wendy's neck and chest were like needles, piercing Joy from her eyes straight through to her heart. Looking at the two of them standing there, Joy was too stunned to speak. How could people like this even exist? And somehow, she'd managed to end up with both of them. At that moment, the thought of divorce surfaced in her mind for the very first time. Five years of marriage, and she had never once considered it. But now that it had appeared, the urge was overwhelming. "Cedric, I don't know who you are anymore. I really don't. You feel like a complete stranger to me." She let out a cold laugh and began backing away, step by step. Seeing her like this, Cedric felt a pang of guilt. He reached for her hand. "JoJo, don't be so petty. I was just helping her out. My love belongs only to you." "Don't touch me. You're filthy."
