Chapter 3

A dull ache spread through her chest, and even her lower abdomen began to throb. She never imagined that behind the group she knew, there was another one entirely. Cedric's friends had always greeted her warmly, calling her "sis." So all this time, behind her back, they'd already been calling Wendy the same thing? How ironic. She flung the bedroom door open and stormed out, only to be met by a maid. "Ma'am, you're awake? The young madam went into labor—sir has taken her to the hospital!" "'Ma'am? 'Young madam'? Who told you to address us like that?" Joy grabbed the vase beside her and hurled it to the floor, chest heaving. The maid flinched, "It was Ms. Nolan's idea. She said sir told her she's also a lady of this house. It's just that you're the first, and she's the second..." Before the maid could finish, Joy was already in the car, racing to the hospital. By the time she arrived, Wendy had already given birth. The room was packed and lively, filled with nearly all of Cedric's close friends. "Cedric, does your wife still not know Wendy's had the baby?" "Don't bring her up. If she hadn't made such a scene, Wendy wouldn't have gone into early labor." Cedric leaned over the bassinet, gently teasing the sleeping newborn, a soft smile tugging at his lips. "This kid is really beautiful." "Yeah, Cedric...If you look closely, he even looks a bit like you!" "Oh, stop it," Wendy called out from the bed, her makeup still flawless—not at all like someone who had just given birth. "If Joy hears that, she'll start overthinking again." "Overthink what? Whether she agrees or not, I'm keeping my promise. Your child will take my surname and be entered into my family registry." "But wouldn't you have to divorce Joy first? Isn't that a bit much?" "It's not a big deal. Once the paperwork for the child is done, I'll divorce you and remarry her. Simple. And if she won't go along with it, I'll just do it behind her back." Wendy sniffled. "Joy is so kind-hearted... I'm sure she'll agree. I'll always be grateful to her. Honestly, however long I get to be your wife. I'd be happy with that." "Relax. You all know how much she loves Cedric! Back in the day, she even went to those business dinners to entertain clients and sing, just to help him land a deal!" "And remember when Cedric was hospitalized for gastritis? She thought it was something serious—got on her knees begging the doctors, then knelt outside the operating room for hours until the surgery was over! She's head over heels for him. You think she'd actually leave? This is nothing compared to Cedric." "My thoughts exactly." Cedric smiled and pulled the woman beside him closer. "No matter what, I'm going to give Wendy and the baby a home." Joy watched the man holding another woman in his arms, her fingers curling tight at her sides. He really had it all figured out, didn't he? He'd been planning to give Wendy a home all along. Well then, how could she not grant him his wish? "A boy? Congratulations." The moment Joy appeared, every face in the room went pale. Cedric immediately let go of Wendy and hurried to Joy's side, his voice turning gentle. "What are you doing here? You're pregnant. You should be resting at home." "I heard everything you just said." Joy looked up at him. "You said you wanted to divorce me. To give Wendy and her child a place in your family."
