The Light Beneath the Ash

The word hung in the air — soft, broken, full of weight. “Lyra…” Addie knelt beside him, her light dimming into a soft glow. Silas's hands trembled as the last of the shadow ebbed away, flickering like ash on the wind. The storm that had lived inside him for so long was finally quiet. Nira watched silently, her flames low and steady. Kael stepped in slowly, sword sheathed, expression unreadable. Addie placed a hand on Silas’s chest. “You’re still here.” His voice cracked. “I didn’t think I was. Not for a long time.” She nodded. “The void didn’t take you. It just made you forget who you were.” “I remembered the pain,” he whispered. “The silence. Your voice calling me... too late.” Addie’s eyes stung. “I’m sorry.” He looked at her, really looked, for the first time. “You chose the world over me. But now I see... the world chose you. You did what I couldn’t.” “I didn’t win,” she said. “I just survived. But if you’re back… maybe we can do more than survive now.” He laughed bitterly. “I don’t think I know how to be a Lightbearer anymore.” Nira stepped forward. “Then learn again. With us.” Kael added, “Four lights. That’s what it always was. That’s what it should be again.” Silas looked around at them — all three. Then he stood. --- The city of Zephyros began to shift beneath their feet. Bridges once broken sealed with beams of gold. Wind carried whispers of names long forgotten. And in the center of the courtyard, a circle of symbols appeared — glowing. Four marks. Four elements. Four Lightbearers. Addie stepped into the circle. One by one, the others joined her — Nira with her flame, Kael with his storm, Silas with a faint silver light returning to his hands. The final mark — the mark of memory — pulsed beneath Addie’s feet. She looked up. “We need to finish what we started.” Silas nodded. “The Void isn’t done. It’s gathering again — far beyond the Reach.” Kael smirked. “Let it come. This time, we’ll be ready.” Nira smiled. “No more falling. No more forgetting.” Addie took a breath. “Then let’s bring the light home.”
