Hawaii 1941When I open my eyes, I’m sitting on grass under a palm tree. The weather is warm and people frolic on the beach in the afternoon sun. A few men wear military uniforms, but others have floral Hawaiian shirts. They are happy and carefree. Calmness settles over me. This is my last adventure. “What’s a pretty little thing like you doing all on your own?” The American voice next to me makes me jump. He is part of a larger group. The two girls already have their chosen man on their arm. There are three single men including the one speaking to me. Will is not among them. “I’m waiting for a friend,” I say. “I could be your friend,” he suggests. “Sorry, I’m not available.” He leans over me and I smell his alcoholic breath. “How about we just play around for a bit until your ‘friend
