Chapter 6: What is This Garbage?

1047 Words
Nolan Quinn observed Linnea Woods' righteous indignation without a word... He pondered how he could have been so foolish to obsess over this woman for the past six years. "Are you planning to play the scoundrel, Nolan? Hurry up and transfer the money. What are you waiting for?" Linnea snapped. At that moment, Kimberly Roberts strutted over with her long legs and forcefully pushed Nolan. Awkwardly for her, Nolan, who worked as a fitness trainer, stood unmovable, rendering her push ineffective. "Me, a scoundrel? Have you lost your mind, Kimberly?" Nolan scoffed with a menacing glare, unable to contain his anger any longer. Kimberly, somewhat intimidated yet accusatory, retorted, "You're the one who's gone mad! You promised to send the money to Linnea’s mom, and you failed. That means you're not keeping your word. Not repaying debts is what exactly? A scoundrel, that's what you are!" Linnea joined in, egged on by her friend, clamoring, "Pay up, you scoundrel!" As Kimberly's loud accusations attracted the attention of neighbors, with some beginning to gossip and even whisper, believing Nolan to be a scoundrel, his rage reached a boiling point. Linnea, who had wronged him, was now trying to scam his money and tarnish his reputation... Reflecting on Linnea's ruthless demeanor the day before, and her kiss with Owen Phillips outside the company building, Nolan's anger exploded, bellowing, "Shut up!" Instantly, they fell silent. Facing Nolan, whose eyes were bloodshot and muscles bulging, emanating a formidable aura, they instinctively felt fear... However, they quickly regained their arrogance, doubting Nolan would dare to strike a woman. Should he dare, they were convinced they could make him pay dearly. "I'll say it once: if you're unfaithful, don't expect a dime. Cause any more trouble, and I'll call the police!" Nolan spat in disgust. Linnea panicked at the thought of missing out on Nolan's 30,000 microdollars, essential for Joshua Woods' wedding. Who else would she turn to for money? Certainly not Owen Phillips! Nolan, perceived as gullible and easily exploited, was her target, not Owen, whom she feared would be frightened off. Realizing her predicament, Linnea resorted to a desperate measure, "So what if I cheated? So what if we can't marry? After six years together, do you think you owe me nothing for my youth?" "If you don't pay up, I'll make a scene at your parents' place, let them suffer because of their terrible son. I'll bring trouble to your gym, tarnish your reputation and cost you your job!" Nolan's head throbbed with rage, his anger boiling over at the thought of Linnea destroying not just his romantic ideals but also his family, his job, and his entire life. Ashley Garcia, who had been quietly observing, finally lost her temper... What kind of heart did this woman have? Yet, Nolan calmed down, "So, you're saying you want 30,000 microdollars for your 'youth'?" "That's right!" Linnea said, exchanging a triumphant look with Kimberly. Seeing Nolan seemingly intimidated, Linnea was sure he would foolishly hand over the money. "Fine, wait here. I'll go get my phone and transfer it to you," Nolan said, his demeanor icy as he turned and walked away. "Pfft, all that talk and still obediently paying us?" Kimberly sneered, dismissing Nolan's previous defiance. She thought, how easy it was to bully the honest! "I'm exhausted. Why couldn't he just give me the money earlier? Why must I personally come here? It's utterly shameless! Just like his rural parents, utterly repulsive. Why doesn't he just leave Philadelphia already?" Linnea muttered. Then, as if she owned the place, she nonchalantly took a seat on Nolan's couch, making herself at home. Meanwhile, she cast a disdainful glance at Ashley Garcia, who stood motionless, her lips curling in jealousy. "Hey, you're so pretty; why stoop to such a despicable job? It's a disgrace to us women!" "Exactly," Kimberly chimed in, her face full of contempt. She assumed Ashley was a s*x worker Nolan had found at some club, unable to believe Nolan could attract such a beautiful woman on his own. Ashley, however, didn't take offense; instead, she smiled, "Miss Woods, choosing Mr. Phillips over Mr. Quinn might just be the biggest regret of your life." She wouldn't stoop to argue with someone as narrow-minded and shortsighted as Linnea, pitying any woman who would forsake Nolan for Owen, equating the Phillips' minor wealth in Philadelphia with Nolan's global affluence. Ashley genuinely felt sad for Linnea, who would never realize what she had missed... Her words only provoked greater laughter from the two women. Kimberly, unable to stop laughing, mocked, "Miss, how many sweet nothings did Nolan whisper to you? Just remember, whatever he paid you, it was only for your 'services' in bed, not for singing his praises afterwards." Linnea, eyes filled with venom, scoffed, "Regret? Let me tell you, sleeping with Nolan will be your biggest regret!" "With your looks, you could have been a socialite, something your kind dreams of, climbing into a wealthy man's bed. But rest assured, once I'm Mrs. Phillips, I'll make sure to spread the word about you in high society... I'd love to see which rich man would want someone tarnished by a pauper." But Ashley couldn't help laughing at these threats, "Then I suppose I should thank Miss Woods for the publicity." Seeing Ashley remain so composed and graceful under threat, Linnea finally lost her cool... Envy gnawed at her. Why wasn't this woman panicking? Was she not afraid? Just then, Nolan appeared. "Here, the 'youth compensation' you wanted, I've brought it!" Linnea and Kimberly immediately shifted their attention. Linnea's excitement surged, but instead of a bank transfer, Nolan presented her with her old suitcase. Thud— Nolan dropped the suitcase in front of Linnea, sneering, "Here, take it! Your 'youth compensation.'" Linnea was stunned. Was this cash? She hurriedly opened the suitcase, only to find not the 30,000 microdollars she coveted but a pile of worn clothes, cheap handcrafted items, and fragrances Furious, Linnea demanded, "What is this garbage? Where's the money?" Nolan burst into laughter, "Don't you remember these, Linnea?" "These 'garbage' items were your gifts to me every year, filled with 'your love and priceless value,' or so you said!" "Have you forgotten all about them?" At this, Linnea was dumbstruck...
