The Library Truce

Monday morning arrived with a crisp autumn breeze that rustled the golden leaves lining the paths of Oakridge High. Maya walked through the front doors, her leather planner tucked firmly under her arm, ready to execute her week with military precision. Chapter 1’s pep rally was officially behind them, and now it was time to focus on the next major milestone: the annual Fall Fundraiser Fair. There was only one problem. "You're sharing the budget oversight with the athletics department," Principal Miller announced, adjusting his spectacles behind his wooden desk. "The school board decided that combining the student council's event planning with the sports teams' outreach will yield better engagement. Julian Vance is representing athletics." Maya’s pen froze mid-air. "With all due respect, Principal Miller, Julian and I have... very different operational methods." "Which is precisely why you're working together," Principal Miller replied, leaning back. "Balance, Miss Lin. Find a way to make it work. The preliminary budget draft is due Friday." Thirty minutes later, Maya sat at a secluded wooden table in the back of the school library, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers from previous years. The quiet hum of the room was interrupted by the scrape of a chair opposite her. Julian pulled out the chair and sat down, dropping a heavily loaded backpack onto the floor. He leaned back, crossing his arms with that familiar, easygoing grin. "So, partner. Ready to manage some funds?" "We are going to divide the workload evenly," Maya said, pushing a neatly typed outline across the table toward him. "I've detailed the historical expenditures for booth setup, permits, and food vendors. You just need to organize the volunteer shifts for the athlete-run stalls." Julian took the paper, skimming it for a few seconds before setting it down. "You already did all this?" "I like being efficient." "You like being in control," Julian corrected gently, leaning forward on his elbows. His amber eyes locked onto hers with surprising intensity. "Look, Lin. I know you think I just goof off and kick a ball around, but I actually care about making this fundraiser work. The soccer team needs new training gear, and this event pays for it." Maya paused, catching the genuine tone in his voice. "I didn't say you didn't care." "You didn't have to. It's written all over your clipboard," he said, a faint smile returning to his lips. He reached over, casually pulling one of her blank note cards toward himself, and tapped his pen against it. "How about this? We split the budget meetings fifty-fifty. You handle the vendors, I’ll handle the student volunteers and logistics. If I miss a single deadline, you get total control." Maya studied him for a long moment. "And if you hit all the deadlines?" Julian’s grin broadened, sharp and confident. "Then you sit next to me at the varsity game this Friday. No clipboard allowed." Maya felt a sudden, familiar warmth rise up her neck. She narrowed her eyes, trying to play off the moment with a cool glare. "Deal. But don't expect me to cheer softly." "I wouldn't have it any other way," Julian said softly.
