The fundraiser Blueprint

470 Words
The wooden bookmark sat neatly tucked inside Maya’s planner, its smooth edges marking the entry for Thursday afternoon. The courtyard of Oakridge High was bustling as student council members and athlete volunteers set up the wooden booths for the Fall Fundraiser Fair. Pumpkin carving stations, baked goods tables, and mini-carnival games lined the paved walkways, framed by trees shedding brilliant orange and golden leaves. Maya stood near the center fountain, reviewing the master layout sheet. For the first time all semester, she wasn't rushing between stations to fix mistakes. "Everything is running two minutes ahead of schedule," Chloe noted, walking up beside Maya with a pair of clipboards. "Did you replace yourself with a robot, or is Julian Vance actually managing the volunteer shift board properly?" Maya looked across the courtyard. Julian was currently hauling heavy wooden crates over to the apple-bobbing station, laughing with two underclassmen soccer players while delegating setup tasks with effortless authority. "He's actually managing it," Maya admitted, a small smile touching her lips. "He reorganized the shift rotations so the athletes could split time between running booths and setting up." "Unbelievable," Chloe teased softly. "The unstoppable Vice President and the unpredictable Soccer Captain... actually making a great team." Before Maya could reply, Julian caught her eye and jogged over, wiping a light sheen of sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. "Vendor trucks just unloaded the sound equipment by the main stage," Julian said, taking a quick breath. "Everything matches your master blueprint, Lin. Want to do a final walk-through?" "Let's check it," Maya nodded, stepping beside him as they walked through the active fairground. As they walked past the craft booths, Julian paused near a small table display filled with handmade art supplies and sketchbooks meant for the student art auction. He reached down, picking up a high-quality graphite sketching set, and turned to Maya. "For your hidden portfolio," Julian said casually, handing it to her. "Consider it a bonus for surviving working with me." Maya took the set, looking down at the heavy pencils in surprise. She met his gaze, finding his amber eyes warm and completely sincere. "Thank you, Julian," she said softly, her usual strict professional barrier melting away entirely. "I... I really appreciate this." "Hey," Julian murmured, stepping half an inch closer as the autumnal wind blew a strand of dark hair across her face. "We make a pretty good team when we're not competing." Maya reached up to tuck the stray hair behind her ear, her heart executing a sudden, deliberate flutter. "Don't get too comfortable, Vance. Homecoming spirit week starts on Monday, and the class points competition is still on." Julian let out a low, confident laugh that sent a pulse of warmth through her chest. "I wouldn't expect anything less, Vice President. Game on."
