Nelly POV
Just to listen to my explanations, to figure out the truth, and see my innocence, that’s all I have asked of J.J, for the past four years, but instead he chose to punish me for what I know nothing of.
Sitting on that bed, packing my hair with the hair comb, his voice echoed.
"Tonight”, "we are going to consummate this marriage," he said, closing in on me.
My heart puzzled, as I paused to look at his face, with great shock.
“Yea,” you heard me right, we are doing it tonight.
“You got to be kidding me." After four years of sleeping in a different room, when we were supposed to be curling ourselves, in lonely cold weather. Four years of being in a marriage that felt like we were total strangers to ourselves.
Four years since I have watched him leave his room for me, the moment he saw me coming to him, and tonight he finally wants me in his arms. I muttered.
"J.J..." His name narrowly escaped my tongue, like a prayer point.
He paused, and for one heartbeat, I let myself believe that the ice in his eyes had finally cracked, that somewhere underneath the four years of silence and negligence, there was still an atom of feelings about me left in his heart, that my chest ached with the sheer size of hope.
I had waited so long for this exact moment that I would happily give my virginity to the man my heart only longs to be with, the man that has been so close, but his heart, a hundred miles away from me.
But my hope was nothing but illusions because his hands were never gentle. His kisses never lingered, as he pushed me back onto the bed, there was no whisper of anything sweet in my ears, no softness in the way he held my waist, but I told myself that pain has always been the price every first timer pays, and it it won’t be long, it will pass.
I clutched my teeth on the white bedspread and my fist firmly held onto it. I could have screened out so loud, but I chose to endure the pain, and buried my face under the pillow, so he wouldn't see the tears gathering at the corners of my eyes, because some foolish part of me still wanted him to see me as a strong woman.
After he brutally pounded my body like a panel beater, he finally pulled me off and sat at the edge of the bed with his back, rigid as stone.
“Consider this as part of my revenge and punishment to you, “he said.
This landed on my chest like a heavy punch. Oh!, So this is what it was all about?” When is this going to end, J.J?
What have I not done to prove to you that I was also a victim in those circumstances?
I have lived four good years of my life paying for a crime I never committed. I have practically sworn an oath in the name of the Moon's goodness just to prove my innocence to you, but u never for once loosen up your heart.
“What more can I do, to prove myself to you?”
With a heavy heart and tears welling up in my eyes, I crawled close to him, trying to grab his hand, when he pulled himself away from me.
"J.J, please hear me out, please… I am begging you."
"Save the damn explanations to yourself because it’s not going to change anything.
"He stood up and walked to the wardrobe and pulled his shirt. Looking back, his eyes caught the small reddish stain on the white bedspread. And for a second, I sensed an atom of pity in his eyes, which also vanished at the same minute.
"You were untouched?” "he asked”.
You never believed my word on anything. If I had told you about this, would you have believed me?
“Well, it means nothing to me”, and it’s still not going to change anything”.
I pulled the blanket to my chest, my whole body shaking, not from the cold but from the sudden, sickening thought of when this was going to end, when my mind flashed back to how it all started.
That fortunate night, I was bound in chains under the tree in that lonely forest, with a rare hope of being rescued by anybody. I had managed to call his phone, but there was no sign of him taking the calls, when I dropped a message, and then leaned my head against the tree, waiting for my fate to be determined by the Moongodess. But it wasn't until thirty minutes thereafter, that I saw a car's headlights, about 200 meters away from me.
Suddenly I heard footsteps coming towards me. It was J.J. He had been able to track my location through Google map, because I had left my GPRS on.
“J.J you came for me?” “I asked.” With tears streaming down my cheeks,.
“Oh! God! “Nelly, who the hell did this to you? Who chained you and left you in this God’s forsaken forest? He asked.
As he quickly fell on his knees, struggling to break me free from the chain. In a twinkle of an eye, we got rounded up by some elderly people. They were the council members who had just descended on us like wolves on a wounded deer. Lion Heart and Braze Rock elders that circled us.
I remembered his Grand Pa too, being forced down onto his knees in the dirt, with his face filled with pain, for such humiliation.
One of the elders stepped forward, pulled out a pink ribbon from his pocket, and grabbed my hand and that of J.J.
“Tonight, the council of Lions Heart and Brace Rock Pack are here tonight to establish peace between our packs.
“Tonight we are here, in the name of the Moongodess and our ancestors, to bind our hands together in marriage as husband and wife."
As he tied the ribbon round our hands
“Hence forth you are one body and soul.” “It's done," he concluded”.
They all looked at each other, nodded their heads in agreement and retreated back into the woods. That is how we were bound in a marriage neither of us had chosen.
I remembered how J.J still looked at me with a tenderness as he carried me home that night, his arms steady beneath me even as exhaustion pulled at his own body. Until we reached his pack and found out that his home had turned to ashes, his parents and many of his pack members were all gone.
He fell to his knees with tears and furry, he looked at me, that was still in his arms.
“So you were the bait. They used to lure me away”, so they could perpetrate their act, right? He said.
Before I could even utter a word, tears rushed down my cheeks, as he pulled me down, and rushed to his parents' lifeless body, lying there on the ground.
That was the moment the door of his heart was shut against me, & since then it has remained that way.
Four have passed, but today he decided to punish me by not just vandalizing my body, but now he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small rubber vial filled with a liquid and threw it on my lap.
"Drink it," he said, and then drew closer to me, as my stomach dropped.
"What is that, J.J?" I asked.
"Something you need…." He stopped.
"I'm not drinking anything. Not after everything you just did to me. How do I know this ... .isn't a plan to get rid of this world?
"Nelly." His tone dropped low, but was dangerous. "Drink it! I said."
"No…, I can't." I shook my head, pressing my back against the headboard, clutching onto the blanket like it was going to shield me.
"Tell me what J.J is?."
He didn’t utter a word again. Instead, he just crossed the room in two strides, gripped my jaw between his fingers, and forced my mouth open, as I struggled, so hard to yank his hand off, but was so strong that I exhausted every strength in me, when he eventually forced it into my mouth.
The taste of the liquid hit my tongue, something so bitter and thick, I struggled to spite it out but he was still firmly holding my jaw, till he ensured that it had passed down through my throat, before he loosened his hand, as I pulled myself away from him, with tears rolled down my cheek.
"What….” Did you give to me?"
“What I have given to you isn't important. What matters now is that "It's done," and there is no way of undoing it." He said”..
And immediately I felt sharp pains, and strange moments in my stomach.
