Chapter 10: The Line We Crossed

744 Words
The drive back home was quiet. Too quiet. Amara sat beside Alexander, staring out the window, but her mind wasn’t on the passing lights or the city outside. It was on him. On Victoria. On everything that had just happened. “You’re thinking too much,” Alexander said suddenly. She didn’t look at him. “Am I?” “Yes.” A small pause. “Then maybe you should stop giving me things to think about.” That made him turn slightly. “What does that mean?” Amara finally looked at him. “It means your past isn’t as ‘in the past’ as you say it is.” Silence. Tense. Sharp. Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly. “Victoria has nothing to do with you.” “She came directly to me,” Amara replied. “That sounds like it has something to do with me.” “She was provoking you.” “And it worked.” The car slowed as they reached the mansion gates. Neither of them moved to get out immediately. The argument lingered between them. Heavy. Unfinished. “You don’t need to concern yourself with her,” Alexander said again, his voice lower now. Amara let out a small breath. “You keep saying that, but everything about tonight says otherwise.” He didn’t respond. That alone said enough. They stepped inside the house. The air felt different. Quieter. More personal. More dangerous. Amara slipped off her heels, placing them aside as she walked further in. “I’m tired,” she said. “Amara.” His voice stopped her. She turned slowly. “What?” He took a step closer. Then another. Not aggressive. But deliberate. “You’re letting this get to you,” he said. She laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “Of course I am.” “You shouldn’t.” “And why not?” she challenged. “Because this is just a contract? Because none of this is supposed to matter?” Her voice cracked slightly at the end. And she hated that it did. Alexander’s expression shifted. Just slightly. “That’s not what I said.” “It’s what you meant.” Another step. Closer. Too close again. “You’re forgetting something,” he said quietly. Amara frowned. “What?” “This only works if we both follow the rules.” Her chest tightened. “The rules,” she repeated softly. No feelings. No attachment. No complications. She knew them. Too well. “And what happens,” she asked slowly, “if one of us breaks them?” Silence. The kind that felt like an answer. Alexander’s gaze dropped briefly to her lips. Then back to her eyes. “That won’t happen,” he said. But this time— He didn’t sound certain. Amara’s heart raced. Too fast. Too loud. “Then you’re lying,” she whispered. Something changed. In the air. In him. In her. Before she could think— Before she could stop herself— She stepped closer. Closing the space between them. Her hand lightly grabbed the front of his shirt. And for a second… Neither of them breathed. “This isn’t fake anymore,” she said softly. His hand moved to her waist instantly. Like it belonged there. Like it had been waiting. “You’re crossing a line,” he warned. But he didn’t let go. “Maybe I already have.” That was it. The last thread of control snapped. He pulled her closer. And this time— There was nothing hesitant about it. Nothing careful. Nothing fake. His lips met hers again. But not like before. Not controlled. Not for show. This was different. Deeper. Real. Amara felt it instantly. Every emotion she had been trying to suppress came rushing forward all at once. Her grip tightened on him. His hold on her became firmer. Possessive. Dangerous. And for that moment— Nothing else existed. Not the contract. Not the rules. Not the consequences. Just them. When he finally pulled away, both of them were breathing harder. But the distance between them didn’t feel safe anymore. It felt like a mistake. Alexander ran a hand through his hair, stepping back slightly. “This shouldn’t have happened.” But his voice was rough. Unsteady. Amara swallowed. “But it did.” They stared at each other. And the truth sat between them. Unavoidable. Irreversible. The line had been crossed. And there was no going back.
