Chapter 15:The Moment She Couldn’t Deny

466 Words
The ride home was quiet. But it wasn’t peaceful. It was heavy. Amara stared out the window, trying to ignore the thoughts in her head. It wasn’t working. “You’re angry.” Alexander’s voice broke the silence. “I’m not.” “You are.” She turned this time. “And what if I am?” “Then say it.” Her chest rose. “You don’t get to act like nothing happened.” “I’m not.” “You are,” she insisted. “One minute you’re crossing every line, and the next minute you’re pretending this is just a contract.” Silence. Then— “Maybe you’re the one pretending,” he said quietly. Her breath caught. “That’s not true.” “Then look at me and say it.” She did. But when the moment came— She couldn’t speak. Because she couldn’t lie. His eyes darkened slightly. “That’s what I thought.” “I didn’t say anything,” she replied. “Exactly.” Her fingers tightened in her lap. “This isn’t what we agreed on,” she said softly. “No,” he replied. “It isn’t.” That made her pause. “You’re just going to admit that?” “I don’t deny what’s obvious.” “And this is obvious to you?” His gaze held hers. “Yes.” Her heart skipped. Because he sounded sure. Too sure. The car stopped. Neither of them spoke again. Because they both knew something had already changed. Later that night, Amara stood in her room, staring at her reflection. She didn’t feel like herself. Her fingers brushed her waist without thinking— And the memory came back. His hand. His touch. Her reaction. She closed her eyes. “This has to stop,” she whispered. But it didn’t feel convincing. The next morning— Everything felt different. But he acted the same. Calm. Distant. Like nothing had happened. “Good morning,” she said. “Morning.” Short. Cold. She sat down, her jaw tightening slightly. So this was it. Back to pretending. Fine. She could pretend too. “You have a meeting today,” he said. She looked up. “With who?” “A business associate.” “That’s vague.” “It’s enough.” She studied him. “You’re testing me.” His eyes met hers briefly. “Maybe.” She nodded slowly. “Alright.” If he wanted to test her— She wouldn’t fail. As she stood to leave, she felt his gaze on her again. That same look. Careful. Unreadable. But intense. For a moment, she hesitated. Then walked away. Because staying— Would only make things worse. And deep down— She already knew the truth. This wasn’t just a contract anymore.
