That night, she tried to avoid him. It didn’t work. “You’re avoiding me.” Amara stopped walking. Slowly, she turned. “I’m not.” Alexander stepped closer. “You are.” Her breath tightened slightly. “Can we not do this?” “No.” And just like that— The distance between them disappeared. Her heart started racing as he moved closer, his presence overwhelming in the quiet hallway. “Alexander…” “You keep walking away,” he said. “Because you keep making things complicated.” His eyes dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her gaze. “Or maybe,” he said quietly, “you don’t trust yourself.” Her breath caught. “I trust myself.” “Then stop stepping back.” She didn’t realize she had— Until her back hit the wall. Her pulse jumped. He was right in front of her now. Close enough to feel his warmth. Close enough to lose focus. “This is a mistake,” she whispered. “Then tell me to stop.” She tried. But the words refused to come. His hand lifted slowly— Brushing lightly against her arm. And just that small touch— Sent heat through her body. “You’re not stopping me,” he murmured. And she wasn’t.
