Chapter 12: Too Close to Control

794 Words
The event was already in full swing when they arrived. Lights. Music. Voices blending into one polished, controlled atmosphere. Amara stepped in beside Alexander, her hand lightly resting on his arm. From the outside, they looked perfect. Untouchable. But inside— Nothing felt steady. “Stay close,” he murmured again. Her lips pressed slightly. “I always do.” But this time, there was meaning behind it. Eyes followed them as they walked in. People greeted Alexander with respect. Some with caution. And others— With curiosity. Especially when they looked at her. Amara lifted her chin slightly, maintaining composure. She wouldn’t give anyone a reason to question her. Not tonight. They stopped to speak with a few business partners. Amara stayed quiet, just like before. Listening. Observing. Learning. Until— “Well, this is unexpected.” Amara turned. A man stood there, smiling. Confident. Too confident. “Alexander Kane,” he said, extending his hand. “It’s been a while.” Alexander shook it briefly. “Daniel.” Then Daniel’s gaze shifted. Straight to her. “And this must be your wife.” Amara gave a polite smile. “Amara.” “Beautiful,” Daniel said without hesitation. Her smile didn’t change. But she felt it. That look. Too familiar. Too interested. “Careful,” Alexander said calmly. Daniel raised a brow. “What?” “That’s my wife.” The air shifted instantly. Subtle. But clear. Amara felt it. That tone again. Possessive. Daniel chuckled lightly. “Relax. Just a compliment.” Alexander didn’t smile. “Keep it that way.” Silence lingered for a second longer than necessary. Then Daniel stepped back slightly. “Enjoy the evening.” And just like that, he walked away. Amara exhaled softly once he was gone. “That was unnecessary,” she said under her breath. Alexander turned slightly toward her. “What was?” “The warning.” “It wasn’t a warning.” She frowned. “Then what was it?” His eyes held hers. “A statement.” Her heart skipped. And she hated that it did. Before she could respond, someone else approached. A woman this time. Older. Elegant. “Well,” she said, smiling. “So the rumors are true.” Amara straightened slightly. “I didn’t think you’d actually get married,” the woman continued, looking at Alexander. “Clearly, I did,” he replied. Her gaze moved back to Amara. Sharp. Observant. “You’ll need strength,” she said quietly. Amara met her gaze. “I have it.” The woman smiled slightly. “Good.” Then she walked away. Amara frowned slightly. “Why does everyone talk like I’m about to enter a war?” Alexander didn’t answer immediately. Then— “Because you are.” Her breath caught slightly. She searched his face. But he wasn’t joking. Later, as the night continued, the tension between them only grew. Small touches. Lingering glances. Unspoken awareness. It was becoming harder to ignore. Harder to pretend. At one point, Amara stepped away to get some air. The balcony was quieter. Cool. Peaceful. She exhaled deeply, placing her hands on the railing. “Overwhelming?” The voice behind her made her turn. Daniel. Again. “I’m fine,” she said. He stepped closer anyway. “You don’t look fine.” “I didn’t ask for your opinion.” He smiled slightly. “Fair enough.” But he didn’t leave. “I was serious earlier,” he added. “You are beautiful.” Amara’s expression hardened slightly. “And you’re crossing a line.” Before he could respond— A presence appeared behind her. Familiar. Cold. Dangerous. Alexander. His hand rested firmly on her waist. Pulling her slightly back. Closer to him. “She said you’re crossing a line,” he repeated calmly. Daniel raised his hands slightly. “Alright. Message received.” But this time, there was no humor in his expression. He left. Without another word. Silence followed. But it wasn’t empty. It was charged. Amara turned slightly toward Alexander. “You didn’t have to do that.” “Yes, I did.” Her brows pulled together. “Why?” His grip on her waist tightened slightly. “Because you’re mine.” The words hit harder this time. Not like before. Not like a statement for others. This felt— Personal. Real. Amara’s breath caught. “This isn’t part of the contract,” she said softly. His gaze didn’t leave hers. “I know.” That made it worse. Because if he knew— Then why was he still doing it? Neither of them moved. The distance between them felt nonexistent. Again. Dangerously close. Again. And once again— It didn’t feel like acting. Not even a little.
