The next day passed in a brutal blur of physical preparation. I spent sixteen straight hours pushing through heavy combat drills, running obstacle courses, and sharpening my blades until my muscles burned and my mind was entirely locked into focus. After the previous night's distraction, every ounce of sluggishness was gone, replaced by the lethal, coiled precision I needed for a run like this.
About an hour before I needed to head out, the internal comms chime buzzed, summoning me to the corner office.
When I pushed open the door, Auntie Edna was standing by her desk, reviewing a final set of mission coordinates. She looked up as I stepped inside, her slate-gray eyes scanning me from head to toe, checking my gear, my posture, my readiness.
"Do you know what you need to do?" she asked, her voice steady and demanding.
"Yes," I answered, keeping my spine straight. "Infiltrate the gang, get close to the office, and steal the file in a cabinet by the desk."
"And what file are you grabbing?" the Director asked, narrowing her eyes.
"It should be in a black folder," I replied, reciting the intel from memory, "but I need to check for the words Mayor Isaac and take everything I see."
"Good girl," she said, a flicker of approval crossing her stern features. "This is a big deal because of the amount of money the client is giving us."
"I understand," I said firmly.
"Okay."
I gave her a sharp nod and turned toward the door, ready to gear up for the drop.
"Oh, Kira?"
I paused, looking back over my shoulder.
Auntie Edna's hard exterior softened for just a fraction of a second. "Be careful."
I offered her a small, confident smile. "I will."
I headed up to my room to get changed for the mission. Instead of standard tactical gear, I pulled out an outfit almost identical to what I’d worn to the club last night—just a tiny bit sluttier. I chose a cropped, skin-tight black top that left very little to the imagination and paired it with form-fitting dark denim jeans that hugged every curve.
It was a deliberate choice. Men were men, and no matter how tough the Black Vipers pretended to be, they were still suckers for a pretty woman. If one of their guards caught a glimpse of me in the dark, a little extra skin bought precious seconds of hesitation before they realized I was a threat.
Once I was prepped, I made my way down to the sub-level garage.
The underground space smelled of gasoline, hot rubber, and motor oil. Rows of high-end, high-performance vehicles sat parked under the fluorescent lights—fully blacked-out sports cars, armored SUVs, and silent electric motorcycles.
These cars were strictly reserved for official missions. We weren't allowed to take them out for fun, no matter how much we begged. Every mile was logged, every engine chipped.
I walked down the main row, my combat boots clicking against the polished concrete floor, scanning the keys hanging on the pegboard to pick out my ride for the night.
I needed something fast enough to outrun a pissed-off gang member, but nothing too flashy. The last thing I wanted was every eye in the territory locking onto me the second I pulled into their lot.
My eyes swept past a neon-blue Audi and settled on a slick, matte-black Chevy Camaro tucked in the corner.
"F*ck it," I muttered with a grin, reaching up and snatching the heavy fob off the pegboard.
I loved this car. It had enough horsepower to break traction on demand, but the dark finish let it melt straight into the shadows. I walked over, pressed the unlock button, and listened to the deep, satisfying clack of the heavy door unlatching.
I slid into the low leather driver's seat, the familiar scent of rich leather and high-octane fuel hitting me instantly. Punching the push-to-start button, the big V8 engine roared to life, a low, guttural rumble vibrating straight through the frame and up my spine.
"Let's get another mission complete," I said to myself, pulling my dark hair back and sliding the shifter into drive.
I tapped the accelerator, and the Camaro glided out of the garage, sweeping through the facility gates and disappearing into the cool night air as I set a course for the Black Vipers' clubhouse.
The hour-long drive flew by. I cranked the stereo, singing along to the music at the top of my lungs, letting the deep roar of the Camaro's engine blend with the heavy bass of my playlist. It was the calm before the storm, the brief window where I could just pretend to be a normal girl on a night drive before the adrenaline took over.
When I finally pulled onto the dirt gravel lot outside the Black Vipers' clubhouse, I cut the engine and let the dark quiet settle over the car.
Looking through the windshield, I saw a crowd gathered near the heavy wooden doors. There was a line, but it wasn't nearly as long as the mess at The Velvet Lounge last night. Tonight, I was playing it low-key. No flashing weapons, no aggressive pushiness. I was going to wait in line like a regular girl.
