He didn't move an inch. He just stayed crouched at the edge, his dark eyes watching me with an intensity that held me anchored right where I was. "Well, then start there," Drakon said, his tone low and quiet, leaving no room for dodge or deflection. I kicked my legs lightly, swimming back to the wall until I was standing right in front of him again, resting my forearms back on the cool tiles. "Well... they didn't show any love or compassion," I began, looking up at him through the drops of water clinging to my eyelashes. "We didn't get any freedom until we earned it—which took a long, long time. And there were definitely no loving stories about my parents." Drakon leaned in a fraction closer, his large hand reaching down to lightly rest over mine where it gripped the edge of the pool.
