The First Millions

430 Words
Months passed, and each harvest brought greater returns. Steve and Anita’s farm had now transformed into a model agribusiness estate. The couple continued exporting watermelons to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and even received interest from Germany. By the end of their fourth season, their total income had crossed Ksh 5.6 million. Steve couldn’t believe it. As he stared at the financial report prepared by their newly hired accountant, he shook his head and whispered, “From digging holes with bare hands to being listed as a major supplier—this can only be God.” Anita laughed. “We’ve worked hard, Steve. But now, it’s time to work smarter.” Using a portion of their profits, they built a permanent farmhouse, installed cold storage units, and hired a full-time agronomist and logistics manager. They also set up a melon nursery to produce high-quality seedlings, which they began selling to other farmers across Makueni, Kitui, and Machakos counties. Then came the moment they never imagined: a call from the Ministry of Agriculture. “Mr. Steve and Madam Anita, the Cabinet Secretary would like to honor your contribution to food security and agribusiness transformation in Kenya during the National Farmers Conference.” They were flown to Nairobi for the event. Dressed in simple traditional attire, they received a National Agribusiness Award, along with a government grant of Ksh 3 million to expand their work with rural farmers. Back in Makueni, the couple remained grounded. They launched the Anita & Steve Foundation for Rural Empowerment (ASFRE). Through this, they: Sponsored over 120 orphaned and needy students in primary and secondary school. Built 10 houses for elderly widows living in rundown shelters. Installed boreholes in dry villages to provide clean water. Funded startup capital for 30 youth interested in agriculture. Their giving transformed the community. Villagers began calling them Baba na Mama Jamii—father and mother of the community. One Sunday, as Steve watched the orphans perform a special song during church service, tears welled in his eyes. “Look at them, Anita,” he whispered. “These children are singing because someone planted a watermelon seed. Can you imagine?” Anita took his hand. “We’re just getting started.” But success also brought new challenges: jealous neighbors, copycats, and pressure from politicians. Still, Steve and Anita remained focused. “Let’s be faithful to the mission,” Steve said. “We are blessed to bless others.” And indeed, their first millions became the first stones in building a legacy that would outlive them.
