The River Ducts.

The duct embraced her with a challenge, narrow walls brushing her shoulders as she pushed herself forward. Behind her, plasma bolts illuminated their escape, the sound of chaos punctuating their resolve. Kiran's boots echoed ahead, his form a beacon of determination in the darkness. “Keep moving!” he urged, a call to action that she could not ignore. Mara gritted her teeth, each inch crawled signifying her resilience. The capsule in her pocket pulsed rhythmically, a reminder of purpose. The metal around her groaned, revealing the pressure they faced but also the strength of their resolve. Aya's voice crackled with urgency in her mind. “They’re breaching the housing. Seconds until entry.” “Yeah, I noticed,” Mara muttered, fueling her fire as she pushed forward, knees toughening against the grating. The duct sloped downward, the air thick with challenges, but she pressed on. Water dripped from above, each drop a testament to what lay ahead. Then, suddenly, the duct dropped steeply. Kiran disappeared from view. “Wait—” Mara shouted, but her grip faltered. She skidded down, metal biting at her skin. The slope released her into the rush of freezing water. She plunged below, the cold awakening her senses, igniting her survival instinct. The current rushed past, yet she fought to rise, clawing her way back to the light. “Kiran!” “Here!” His voice resonated, filled with unwavering presence. The current swept her toward him, its relentless pull urging her to let go and trust. Aya broke in, a voice of caution. “Warning. Hydraulic surge incoming. Flow increase—forty percent.” Mara spat water, confusion mingling with determination. “What the hell does that mean?” “It means—hold on.” The surge intensified, propelling them forward, and Kiran’s words rang with clarity. “Don’t fight it. Let it carry us!” “You’re insane!” “Maybe. But it’s faster than bullets.” The water hurled them onward, the darkness beckoning, but with each stroke, they were reminded of their strength. They emerged into a vast underground reservoir, the unknown stretching before them. Mara tumbled into an open space, colliding with the surface, but quickly kicked upward, her will to survive stronger than the icy depths. When she broke the surface, Kiran was nearby, alive and fighting, a mirror of her own spirit. Faint lights flickered along the walls, illuminating the strength of their surroundings. Huge pillars stood resilient from below, supporting the weight of what lay above them. Mara clafleshoward the nearest ledge, pushing herself beyond limits, dragging herself out with sheer determination. Kiran followed, their breaths intermingling with the rhythm of life. In the lingering silence, they glanced at each other, acknowledging the fight still ahead. “You call that a plan?” Mara challenged, the spark of fire still igniting within her. He laughed softly, “We’re alive, aren’t we?” “Barely.” But in that moment, she found solace in their survival. She leaned against the wall, shivering, yet the fragment in her pocket pulsed brighter, a beacon of untapped potential. Aya’s hesitant voice cut through the air: “Mara… the resonance is intensifying. Your implant is destabilizing.” She pressed her palm to her temple, embracing the truth. “Not now.” Kiran’s gaze softened, understanding her struggle. “You saw it again, didn’t you? In the stairwell.” She couldn’t respond, the memory flooding back—sunlight, truth, a visceral connection—etched into her being. Kiran’s voice soothed her chaos. “The fragment is rewriting you. Every vision you get means the Archive is bleeding through. You can fight it, or you can accept it. But you can’t ignore it.” Mara’s defiance flared, “You think I want this? You think I asked to be some glitch-ridden freak in your crusade?” His calm demeanor stood strong against her storm. “No. But maybe you’re exactly what we need.” She pushed him back, fire in her heart, “I’m not your savior.” Before another word could escape, the ground trembled, a low rumble vibrating through the reservoir, a reminder of their reality. Aya’s voice sliced through the tension, urgency lacing her tone. “Warning. Cleaners deploying drones. Multiple entries detected.” Panic surged through Mara. “They’re here?” “Of course they’re here,” Kiran responded, determination igniting. “This place connects to half the city’s drainage. Perfect place to flesh us out.” The faint hum of drones buzzed overhead, red lights pulsing in the shadows—an imminent challenge, yet one they were ready to face. Mara crouched, armed and vigilant. “How do we get out?” Kiran pointed toward a maintenance hatch, a pathway to freedom. “That leads to the old filtration tunnels. If we reach it, we can disappear.” “It’s a thirty-meter swim with drones overhead.” “Got a better idea?” Mara bit back her frustration, determination building within. “Fine. But if I get fried, I’m haunting you.” Together, they slipped back into the water, moving with purpose and unity. Each stroke a testament to their collective strength, their muscles burning but hearts unyielding. Above, the drones continued their search, a reminder of the obstacles they faced, yet they remained undeterred. One buzzed too close, the heat of its presence stoking the flames of their resolve. Aya whispered guidance to them. “Left. Dive now.” Mara obeyed without hesitation, plunging beneath the surface as the light swept past. Her lungs demanded air, yet she pressed on, fighting against the cold as she swam toward the hatch. Her chest screamed for relief, but she held on, knowing they were not simply surviving—they were becoming something greater.
