Clarissa’s POV
I was supposed to be getting engaged to my fated mate today, but I couldn’t stop my flow of tears watching him pledge his life and undying love to another woman. She was the daughter of one of the strongest Alphas in our zone, and marrying her could help him become an Alpha. He had always wanted to be Alpha, and the opportunity came when our Alpha died a few weeks ago, and every eligible young man in our pack was allowed to participate in the contest. All they needed was marriage, and they were fit to compete. And Nathan’s sure ticket was her, not me.
It was known that I was the outcast daughter of an Alpha who chose love over his pack.
A figure soon sat beside me, and I hurriedly dabbed my eyes. “Let me guess, you are the mate whom he rejected for power?” the voice asked from beside me. “Then I guess I need no introductions,” I answered as I stood and tried to make my way out of the wedding foyer.
“Excuse me, can I get something strong?” I asked the bartender. He nodded and went towards the shelves to start mixing something from various bottles. I sighed into my palm. I couldn’t figure out what exactly made me come to this wedding. Was it to humiliate myself? Or to give myself the closure I needed? No, no closure was needed; I obviously never meant anything to Nathan, and it was evident now. To think I had begun planning our future as soon as the Moon Flame drifted towards both of us during our official initiation ceremony as part of our pack.
The Flame usually drifted to two fated mates together at the same time. So, when the flame drifted to us, it was no initial surprise. I hadn’t even realized I was holding my breath until Nathan grabbed me by my shoulder, where the Flame burn mark was, and kissed me.
“Whiskey, please.” I heard beside me, as I was brought back to reality, by the voice that had gotten on my nerves a few mins ago. I tried to gulp down my drink and leave, but I ended up choking on it.
“Gently Miss, you don’t need to leave on my account.” He was really pushing it this time, and I could feel the anger build up, but sincerely, this wasn’t the time to make a scene. I wasn’t even supposed to be here. I had almost successfully made my way to the exit when I heard the voice of the one person whose laugh had once filled my stomach with butterflies.
“Clarissa, wait,” I heard Nathan call out. He leisurely walked over, his new wife in tow.
“You must be Clarissa, nice to finally see you.” The little bimbo said, eyeing me from under her false elongated lashes.
“Congratulations Susan. I wish you the best.” I said, extending my hands to shake hers. But she ignored my hand, went to Nathan, and gave him a deep kiss. It felt like my heart had broken in a million more pieces, and I could taste my anger, hate, resentment all at the same time.
How could my life take such a devastating turn? My fated mate had left me because he was power hungry, rendering all the years we had spent together null. Did the Moon Flame mark on our shoulders mean nothing to him?
I retracted my hand and gave a brief smile, “Take care Nathan, and have a wonderful life.” I didn’t wait to hear what he had to say and made my way to my beat-up truck.
A few steps to my truck, the heel of my sandal gave way, and I began to fall to the ground. I closed my eyes and waited to crash into the floor, but the impact never came.
