Chapter 5

Clarissa’s POV We got to the jet, and he helped me climb in. He handed me the headphones, but as he was about to help cross my seatbelt, the scent of his cologne filled my nostrils, and I let out a sigh. He leaned back into his seat with a subtle smile. I adjusted myself. “So, what is this payment going to be in the form of? Money? Or do you need me to stalk someone for you?” He smirked and shook his head. “Be patient darling. You aren’t giving me money, neither are you stalking anyone for me; I have enough men for that.” “Then why did you decide to look into what Nathan asked of the Association by yourself, when you clearly have enough men to spare?” I asked, trying to understand what was in it for him to do this ‘dirty work’ by himself. He didn’t reply, nor did he show any emotions. ___ We got to Brooklyn after 15 minutes of total silence in the air, during which Luc refused to answer my questions. “I’ll pick you up for dinner,” he said into my ear, as he helped me down from the jet. “Is this what you want me to pay you back with? Dinner?” “You ask so many questions, Clarissa. Please be ready by 8. My driver will take me to the office and drop you off at home.” After his driver dropped me off at home, I got to my wardrobe and began searching for a suitable outfit for tonight. I didn’t know why I was trying to impress him, but I just wanted him to see me in my best, like a little child showing off. I tried to call my best friend, Betty, but her line couldn’t connect. She would be at the cafe where she assisted her grandaunt to run a mini library and a coffee shop. I finally sat down after about 2 hours of frantic search. Then my phone rang, and it was Betty. “Hey girlfriend, I’m sorry for missing your call. The cafe was packed this afternoon. We even ran out of seats. hat’s up?” she said all in one breath. “Hi girl, I understand, and I’m not mad at you. I just need your help. I have a dinner date tonight, but I don’t know what to wear.” “Dinner?” she squealed over the phone. “With who? You know what, let’s go get you a new dress, so you can spill all the tea.” “You always know my mind. Meet you in 10 at Tiff’s.” I said before hanging up the phone. When I got to Tiff’s boutique, Betty was already there. “How did you get here so fast, Bett?” I asked. “I teleported, because I couldn’t wait.” She said with all smiles. “You are even more excited than I am,” I said, laughing as she pulled me towards the dinner gowns section of the store. After trying on several gowns, she still hadn’t made a decision. If it were left to me, I would have chosen the first dress I tried on. “So, what do we do since you obviously don’t like any of these?” I asked, as I tried to sit while she thought of the next step. “Wait here, be right back.” She said as she disappeared behind the fourth row of clothes. As I waited for her, my mind began to drift to how the last twenty-four hours had been a roller-coaster. She soon appeared holding a nude-coloured gown. I went in to try it on. As soon as I emerged from the changing closet, Betty gasped. “You look very beautiful, Clea, like a Hollywood diva.” I didn’t know what to say, or how to feel. Few weeks ago I would have giggled like a child because I knew I would wear it to hang out or go on a date with Nathan. But now, I didn’t want to get my hopes up for any reason. “Alright, now that we got you a dress, spill all the tea, sis,” Betty giggled as she grabbed my hands and pulled me towards the waiting chair. I told her about all that had happened in the last couple of hours. She was excited, up until it came to the part of going on a date with Lucine. Then, I saw the worry lines on her forehead.
