“Hmm, as much as I want this to go well, I can’t help but feel like something is missing in this equation,” she said, standing up and coming to stand in front of me.
I never berated Betty’s skepticism about any situation. It was like she knew it all and was rarely wrong. She was also a good judge of character for a human.
She had warned me that Nathan would hurt me some months ago, but said I could keep an open mind in case she was wrong. Well, here we are. She wasn’t, but I had hoped she was.
“But I’m sure all will be well,” she blurted out, bringing me back to the present.
I stood up and hugged her tightly. We remained like that for some mins, enjoying each other’s company, then we pulled apart.
“Let’s go get you all glammed up for tonight.”

We got to my apartment and began checking for styles that would fit and not seem like we were doing too much, when the doorbell rang. Betty grabbed her purse and began heading for the door.
“Who is that Bett?” I asked, peaking out of the wardrobe door.
“I ordered us pizza,” she said, grinning. “We don’t want you getting there and eating just salads on an empty stomach; besides, we want you to develop better eating habits. All you had was coffee today.” She finished saying, her lips in a pause, as if she was displeased at me.
“Ok, I’ll have some if it’ll make you happy.”
“Great, let me go get it.”
She came back a few minutes later with a box much larger than a pizza box.
“What is that?” I asked, standing up from where I was already seated waiting for her.
“Some man in a suit handed it to me, and it has your name on it.”
I opened the lid of the box and saw a message that said, “Wear this for tonight.” And it was signed L.P.
“Oh my gosh, he sent you a dress, Clea.”
I opened the cover and saw the most beautiful red dress.
“Try it on, let’s see,” Betty said, sitting down and clapping her hands in excitement.
I took off my clothes and tried on the new dress. Betty adjusted it a bit and zipped it up. It was my perfect size. How in gracious Selene’s name had Lucine gotten my body size? I barely saw him size me up. But I couldn’t deny it was a lovely fit.
“You know what Clea? Wear this, you can wear that nude another day.”
I was about to agree, but realized that Lucine wanted a prize, something he could control. I had heard tales of men like him but I wasn’t going to be one of those girls for hi. No, not me. He wouldn’t control me. Not by a long shot.
“No Bett, I’ll wear what we bought. As much as I like this, I don’t want it to seem like I’m dependent on him and need favours from him. If he doesn’t like my dress, I’ll come home, get ice cream, and we will binge on any cringe-worthy shows. Cool?” I asked, holding her hand and waiting for a response.
“I’m so proud of you, Clea. Yes, let’s do that.” She responded teary-eyed.
“Alright then. Let’s get me ready.” I said, unaware of how tonight was going to spark some unavoidable events in the following days.
