Chapter 8

I opened the booth door and followed the sign to where the restrooms were. I walked straight to the sink to let cool water run over my skin. After a few mins I began to think of what he had said before we entered the restaurant. He wanted me to follow him to a conference. But I couldn’t leave work. I was on a break because my boss heard of what happened between me and Nathan, and gave me a few days off to rest. And that break was expiring in barely forty-eight hours. I needed to be back at work by the day after tomorrow. I was going to reject his offer and tell him to request something else. As I got back to the booth, our food had arrived. The waiter was standing close by and helped me open the door. I thanked him, and sat at my spot. I took a bite of the food and noticed Lucine was watching me. “Do you like it?” He asked like he was waiting for a review. “Yes, I do actually. Its a burst of various flavours I didn’t know could blend well.” “I told him to avoid the onions because I know you don’t like them.” I was about to wipe my mouth when he spoke. I stopped and put the towel down. “How did you know that?” I asked. No one knew about my dislike of onions asides my late parents and my best friend. So how could he have found out about it? I had a feeling that somethings were not as it seemed, and I needed to actually figure out how Lucine knew so much about me on such short notice. The rest of the date went by quietly. We skimmed through conversations and didn’t have any deep talks. Then it was time for us to leave, he looked at me and asked for my response to his question earlier. “No, I can’t go along with you for your event. I have to be back at work in two days, and I have already used up my leave days. I’m sorry, but you either choose another date or another occasion.” I could see his disappointment and anger, but there was no going back on my words. ___ I got home and met Betty sleeping on my couch. I could smell the pizza from the box on the side table by her head. I nudged her awake and asked if she would be going back to her aunt’s. “No Clea, I’m staying tonight. I already called grandaunt Millie. She agreed, but said I would need to be at the shop earlier to set up before she gets there. So, how did the date go?” she asked, rubbing her eyes and sitting up. She saw my face and instantly knew something was wrong. I told her about how the date went, what he asked me, and how I turned him down. “Hmm, but are you ok with your decision? Do you think you might eventually regret it?” she asked, wanting to know if I was going to change my mind. “No Bett, I have made up my mind, I also need to find out how he knows so much about me,” I replied. The next couple of days were uneventful until the evening of the day after Lucine asked me to accompany him to his conference. I was about to close the spa for the day when Susan walked in with two other girls. “Hi Susan, we are closed for the day. Please come back tomorrow morning,” I said with as much smile as I could muster, which honestly, wasn’t a lot. “Clarissa, you don’t speak to your customers that way,” one of the girls whom I later identified as Noelle said. “Yes, she’s right, you could drive away your customers, and run this place to the ground. It isn’t even yours.” The second girl, Vivian, added. “Please, I’m in no mood for this. Kindly come back tomorrow. We are open from 8 am to 6 pm.” I said, pointing to the clock. Then I heard Noelle whisper to Susan, and they erupted into a fitful laugh. My wolf growled like we were ready to pounce on them. I couldn’t afford to be taken to the disciplinary board, so I took deep breaths and tried to be calm. “What is it, Reject?” Susan asked, waiting for my response. I knew she was trying to taunt me into a fight with her, but I knew better. “Nothing, Bimbo. Or do you want there to be a problem?” I asked, going closer to her and her minions. “What? You can’t speak to me that way. Do you know who my father is? I’ll have you dealt for laying your filthy hands on me.” She said, as she held her arm, as if I had actually touched her. “Please leave, and take the things you dropped with you,” I said, pointing to her minions. They also began to cry, hurdling together like they had just been beaten. A few minutes after I had gotten home, I saw a notification on our pack’s system app. Susan had reported me to her father. He was part of the Lycan association administrative unit due to him being a reigning Alpha for over two decades. And now he was using his connections to take this situation with the Association heads. I had been given twenty-four hours to prepare to defend why I shouldn’t be banished after brutally attacking an Alpha and a member of the Lycan association’s daughter. And presiding over my case was the one man I wasn’t ready to see.
