Maya never liked surprises—unless they came with frosting. So when Owen showed up at the café carrying a white bakery box tied with a red ribbon, her brain immediately screamed cake. What she didn’t expect was the little note tucked under the bow.
"Open after closing. Alone."
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "He left you a mystery box? That's... kind of hot."
Maya flushed, trying not to smile. “It’s probably just new muffins.”
"Sure," Sophie teased. "Because muffins come with secret notes."
As the day wore on, Maya tried to act normal, but every glance toward the box made her pulse quicken. Rosa noticed. So did Mrs. Greene, who whispered, "Looks like someone’s finally going to get frosted."
At 8:05 p.m., Maya locked the door, dimmed the lights, and unwrapped the box. Inside wasn’t cake. It was a perfectly frosted cupcake with the word “YES?” written in pink icing.
Confused and intrigued, she almost missed the second note beneath it:
"You once told me your dream was to run a bakery of your own. Want to do it together? I found a space. We could call it… 'Muffin to Lose.'"
Her heart did a triple flip. Owen wasn’t just asking her out—he was offering a dream.
Behind her, the door creaked. She turned to see him there, holding a small key.
“I didn’t know if this was crazy,” he said. “But you believe in sugar and second chances, right?”
Maya didn’t respond with words. She crossed the room, kissed him full on the lips, and whispered, “Let’s bake something brilliant.”
Outside, Sophie and Liam peeked through the blinds.
"You owe me ten bucks," Sophie whispered.
"Worth every cent," Liam replied.
And for the first time in weeks, the café was quiet. But inside, two hearts beat fast—proof that sometimes, the sweetest love stories start with a box and a dream.
