Chapter Two: The secret I Can't Tell

1196 Words
Aria’s POV “Miss? Can you hear me?” A voice pulled me out of the dark and I tried to open my eyes but the light above me hurt. “Good. She’s awake,” someone said and I blinked. White ceiling, white curtain, and the smell of medicine. I then moved my hand and something was taped to it. “Where am I?” My voice sounded weak. “You fainted,” a nurse said. “You’re in a clinic.” Clinic? Rain, the gate and Adrian standing at the door. I sat up at once. “How did I get here?” “A driver brought you,” she replied. “He left after signing the papers.” A driver, and not even him? I then pressed my lips together. “Can I leave?” “Wait, the doctor wants to see you.” I nodded and a few minutes later, a middle-aged woman in a white coat walked in and she looked at a file in her hand. “How are you feeling?” “I’m fine,” I said quickly. “It was just the rain.” She then looked at me over her glasses. “When was your last period?” My heart skipped. “Why?” “Answer me.” I lowered my eyes. “It’s late.” “How late?” “Almost a week.” She closed the file. “We ran some tests while you were unconscious.” My fingers gripped the bedsheet. “Tests?” She then smiles. “Congratulations, you are six weeks pregnant.” The words floated in the air. Six weeks? Pregnant? I stared at her face, waiting for her to laugh and said it was a joke but she did not. “You’re sure?” I whispered. “Yes.” She then turned the screen of a small machine toward me and a black and white image appeared but I saw nothing at first and then she pointed. “There.” A tiny dot. “That’s your baby.” My throat tightened and I reached out and touched the edge of the screen. “That small?” “It will grow.” Grow? Inside me. Then a tear rolled down my cheek before I could stop it and the doctor handed me a tissue. “You need rest, no stress.” I almost laugh, and then she printed something and gave it to me. “This is your ultrasound report.” I held the paper carefully and my name was on it. “ Mother.”I pressed the paper against my chest and Adrian’s face flashed in my mind. If I told him, what would he say? Will his eyes soften? Will he regret the divorce? Or will he look at me the same way he did today? Like I was a problem and the doctor spoke again. “Does your husband know?” The word hit me, and I swallowed. “Not yet.” “You should tell him soon.” I nodded but said nothing and after changing back into my clothes, I walked out of the room slowly. The hallway was long and my legs felt weak and then I stopped near the corner to catch my breath and I heard a voice. It was familiar, sweet and dangerous. “I don’t care,” Vivian said and I froze. She was standing near the window at the end of the hall and her back was facing me, she was on the phone. “I told you,” she continued. “If she dares get pregnant, I won’t let that child be born.” My heart stopped and I gripped the ultrasound paper so hard it that crumpled. She then laughed lightly. “Adrian doesn’t even touch her like that. You think I don’t know him?” I stepped back quickly, and hid behind the wall. She was here. Why was she here? Did she follow me? “I waited three years,” she said again. “I won’t let some orphan girl ruin everything.” Me? Orphan girl? My nails dug into my palm. “I’ll handle it,” she said. “Trust me.” She then ended the call and her heels tapped against the floor as she walked past my hiding place and I held my breath. If she turned her head, she would see me but she kept walking and when her footsteps faded, I slid down the wall slowly and my body shook. She said she wouldn’t let the child be born, she didn’t even know I was pregnant. Or did she? I then looked down at my stomach. “I will protect you,” I whispered. But how? Should I tell Adrian? If he knew, maybe he will protect us. But what if he thought I am lying? What if he thought I was trying to trap him? I remembered his face when I signed the papers, there was no regret, no pain but only decision. I just walked out of the clinic into the bright afternoon, tye rain had stopped and my phone vibrated in my bag. I then took it out. It read a breaking news. “Adrian Cole to Remarry His First Love.” My hands felt numb and I clicked the link. There was a picture of them and Vivian stood beside him, smiling at the camera and her hand rested on his arm. He looked calm, not forced and not angry but calm. Under the picture, the article said they were seen having dinner together last night. Last night? While I was still in his house, While I was still his wife. My vision blurred and I zoomed into the picture, he was looking at her and not at the camera. At her. My chest hurt again. “Maybe I should not tell him,” I murmured. If he was already planning to marry her, what place do I have? What place did my child have? My phone vibrated again and it was a new message, it was from and unknown number and I stared at the screen for a long time before opening it. The message was short. “Does Adrian know about the baby?” My breath stopped, the ultrasound paper slipped from my fingers and fell to the ground and then I picked it up quickly and looked around. People walked past me, they were busy with their own lives and no one looked suspicious. My heart beat fast. Who sent this? How do they know? I typed back with shaking fingers. “Who is this?” The message was delivered but there was no reply and waited but there was nothing. I tried calling the number but it was switched off and then I looked around again. Cars passed by and a woman pushed a stroller. A man argued on the phone, everything looked normal but I felt eyes on me. Watching and waiting and then my phone vibrated again, it was another message from the same number. This time, it was only three words. “Tell him soon.” My hands began to tremble.
