The Remains of Yesterday

Year 2135

I was glancing at a window, slightly seeing my reflection. Watching our old home, the home where I grew up, slowly crashing down and turning into pieces, and before this day ends, my home, our home will be just a memory. I took a last look, cherishing the moment and thinking how happy I was when I'm at home, even though our life there is difficult. I turned away and looked at my hands. My hands are stained with blood, the blood of the people I left behind and sacrificed for the safety of the people I love. The blood that no matter what I do, I will never get rid of it, I tried to scrub them away but it's still there, everyone can't see it but... I can, and I have to suffer for it.

Tears run down my cheeks, looking at the girl with a huge smile plastered on her face hugging her favorite stuffed toy staring right back at me. I wish I can be her. Young, careless, and innocent. She doesn't know what world and responsibility she will face in the future, no one knows.

"Faster!" I said while helping our people going towards the woods. They are coming and most of our people are not yet in the woods. I need to find a way, no, I must find a way. I'm not going to just stand right here, helping people cross the barriers and shout 'Faster!' while those craps are going near us and there will be no time for us to run.

"Aesira! Thank God, your safe!" my best friend, Charlotte said. We hugged for a moment. Once we've parted I continue what I was doing earlier.

"Charlotte you know how to drive, right?" I asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"We need to hurry or else we're all dead. I want you to drive that minibus. Bring the kids, pregnant women, oldies, and 2 soldiers with you now." she nodded and walk away but I grabbed her arm.

"You know where our cabin is, right?"

"Yes, I know a shortcut going there without using this road." I let go of her arm then she ran towards the van on the other side of the road.

"All the kids, pregnant woman, oldies please follow her. No more question just move." I shouted while pointing at Charlotte. I asked 2 soldiers to assist them and keep them safe until they get to the cabin.

"I'll go with my kids." The man said while walking towards the Van. I chased and call him but he didn't stop.

"I understand you, sir. But you need to let your kids ride that van, so we won't have a hard time going to the camp. There are only a few seats there and the van is leaving in a minute. They're going to be safe, I promise. Don't worry." He looked at me then he talks to his kids. I look at my back and saw them marching down the road.

"Let's go people!" I said the I ran to my spot. I look back and forth, the van drove off and 20 more people are still outside the road crash barricade including me.

When there were only 10 of us on the road, I saw a child playing in the middle of the road. I run towards the child and seat in front of her.

"What are you doing here baby girl? Where's your parent?"

"I-I don't know," she said in her cute tiny voice.

"Come with me, maybe your parents are on the way to the camp with the other people," I said while standing and extending my hands to her.

"My mom said don't come with the stranger." I look at my back to see if they are near. They are at least 20 miles away.

"I'm Aesira, and you are?"

"Annie."

"Now I'm not a stranger anymore, pls. come with me." she just thought for a moment then nodded, she holds my hand and we run. Chloe stops running and looks behind us. She let go of my hand and run towards her doll.

"Come on kid, let's go!" I said while trying to pull her but she bites my hand. She ran towards her doll when I let go of her. I carried her in my shoulder when I caught her.

"Lucy! Lucy! my doll!" she said while crying.

"Fine! wait for me there, okay?" I said while pointing to the road crash barricade. She nodded and I run. Before I get there my mom throws the doll over me.

"Mom! What are you doing here? Where are the others?"

"A little sacrifice for everyone to be safe. They're making their way to the cabin. I gave instructions to Ethan. Follow them."

"Are you out of your mind, Mom? I will not leave you here." I tried to pull her but she just stands there like a statue. Tears started to fall down my cheeks.

"Mom! Let's go! They're getting near." I tried but she pushes me away from her.

"Aesira! please go, now. Bring the range rover defender with you so you can go there before midnight. I want you to survive, I want you to live and be safe. I want you to lead." she gave me the key. I didn't accept it and hug her.

"Mom! pls. come with me. I don't know what to do without you."

"I know you can, you're a brave girl, Luna. Always remember that I will always be by your side, even if I die. I love you, sweetheart, tell that to your father and Lil sis when you meet them again. Now go!" she said. She kisses my forehead and gave me the car key.

"I love you too mom." I hugged for one last time then I ran to the car and called Annie. I wiped my tears so I can see the road before I started the car. I look at the rear mirror for a minute and saw my mom driving their attention to her. When she caught their attention, she entered the other side of the woods and she's out of my sight.

I wiped my tears and put my eyes on the road, only to be surprised by a dog crossing the road. I immediately stop the car before I hit him.

"Don't go down Annie, ok?" she nodded then I approached the dog.

"Hello there! Do you have someone with you?" I said while looking around.

"Wanna come with us?" he barked then we went inside the car. I started the car and drove inside the woods. I follow the trails until we get to the cabin. Some of the people are sleeping in their tents, some are building them, some are roaming around the camp while others are talking at each other around the bonfire. we go out of the car and I carry the sleeping Annie in my arms, I went inside the cabin and entered my younger sister's room, I lay her down on the bed, and I slowly went out. I almost screamed when Ethan suddenly popped out in front of me.

"H-hi? Why are you still awake?" I said.

"I was waiting for you and your mom. Speaking of your mom, where's your mom?" he said while peeking inside the room.

"I need to rest, you too. Find her parents when she wakes up tomorrow." I walked away but he immediately grabbed my arms. I look at his hand then at his face. He seemed embarrassed by what he did so he let go of my arms.

"Let's just talk tomorrow. Good night," I said while smiling at him then I went inside my room. I locked the door then put my bag in the chair near my bed. I fell asleep as soon as I lay down on my bed.
