“What is going on?” I said as I lifted Doris into my arms.
She felt too light… too still.
No response. No movement. Nothing.
My heart slammed against my chest as I ran out of the rooftop, her head resting weakly against me.
“Stay with me,” I kept saying, even though she couldn’t hear me.
I didn’t stop running.
Not even when people turned to look.
Not even when I heard voices rising behind me.
I reached the car and quickly placed her in the passenger seat. My hands were shaking as I pulled the seatbelt over her and locked it in place.
For a second, I just stood there, staring at her face.
Her lips were slightly parted. Her eyes closed.
