**Evie's POV**
I stumble out of bed and peek at the clock, which reads 6:00 AM. I mutter something unintelligible about the ridiculous hour, trying to stay as quiet as possible so as to not wake my baby man. I pull on a pair of shorts and a tank top as I walk to the kitchen to begin breakfast.
The smell of coffee and bacon brings my little one to the land of the living and I hear him ambling towards the kitchen to get his meal. I scoop him up and plant a kiss on his cheek as I snatch a piece of bacon that has cooled enough for him to munch on while I finish the eggs.
I plate our food and after we eat I take little man to get him dressed and ready for the day. "Okay Love, we gotta go get the outside chores done first because it's supposed to be extremely hot today." We live in Texas, and this summer is one of the hottest we've encountered in a long while.
"Let's get some ice tea and get started," I say as we clear the table and approach the front door.
I get Will situated with some toys under a shade tree then head into the garage to retrieve the mower. I prime the carburetor and pull the cord, but nothing happens. No, this cannot be happening, I think to myself, Mom will have an aneurysm if I don't get this done. I check the gas level and see that it is bone dry. Looking for the gas can, I realize that it is just as empty.
I let out an exasperated sound that catches the attention of my son. I catch him as he comes charging at me and we go to retrieve the keys to the spare vehicle.
I get him loaded and secured into his car seat and take off to the gas station. I maneuver through the small amount of traffic reaching the station that is four blocks from the house.
I pull in and park at a pump. Leaving the car running, I fetch the can and begin the process of starting the pump. I notice the card reader is not working, so I lock the car and head inside to pay the attendant.
I stand there fidgeting as the line seems to take ages to grow shorter. I'm concerned about my son. Not because the heat or that he's alone at the moment, the doors are locked and air conditioning blowing full blast, but because he gets antsy when he's forced to stay still for extended periods of time. I just know that he's gonna give me an earful when I return.
I finally reach the counter and pay the attendant for my gas so she can turn the pump on. I smile at her as she gives me my change and turn to walk out. Only to run right smack into the person standing behind me.
"Excuse me," I say politely despite the growing irritation. I look up to meet the most alluring blue eyes.
"No, excuse me, Evie," I hear his voice and it catches me off guard. This guy knows me?
I move my gaze from his eyes to take in the rest of his features in hopes of sparking some recognition. "Chris?"
What is he doing back in town? I thought he had moved to the city ages ago! I gathered my thoughts as he confirmed that I had guessed correctly.
"I'm glad to see you again, Chris, but I gotta run," I hurriedly addressed him as I ran out of the station. I pumped my gas as quickly as I could so I could hurry and get back to the house to complete the tasks needed to appease my mother.
Upon returning, I get Will situated again under the tree and begin the gruelling task of mowing the lawn. Periodically I take brief breaks, quenching my thirst and ensuring little man has everything he needs.
After I finally finish mowing, I gather Will and his toys and head inside to cool off and start the inside chores. While taking a break to cool off, I check the time on my phone and notice I have a couple unread messages. Curious, I opened the chat notification.
Hey, Evie! It was so good to see you. Wait, why is Chris messaging me? You look great, I hope we can catch up some time.
I'm lost in my thoughts and trying to decipher his messages when William throws an empty bowl at my head. I chuckle as I say, "Guess you're hungry, huh, baby man?" I get to work making him lunch and once he's fed, I lay him down for his nap.
