While my son is napping, I decide to knock out the dishes from this morning and pull out the ingredients needed for dinner tonight.
I keep checking my phone periodically, hoping for another message from Chris. It dawns on me that he won't message me again until I respond to his initial messages. I don't know what to say to him. I put my phone back down and fetch the broom.
I can't seem to shake thoughts of him. It's almost like he's taken over my brain. I try my best to focus on the task at hand, sweeping and mopping, but my thoughts continue to circle back to the holder of the purest blue eyes.
"Get it together, Evie" I scolded myself. I sweep up the pile of dust and dirt that accumulated and dump it in the trash.
I head outside to grab the mop bucket, and grab the mop on my way back in. Going to the bathtub, I fill the bucket with scalding hot water and add the juice of five lemons and a small spoon of Castille soap.
I begin the gruelling job of mopping, only for my mind to begin its wandering journey back to the thoughts of Chris. We were so young when we first met
**Flashback**
"Leah, are you sure I'll be okay going to church?" I ask my best friend, Leah, as she pulls me onto the church bus that's parked outside the highschool. We're freshmen, and we've just started here.
She huffs, "Yes, Evie, everything will be fine! I promise you'll have fun."
She's an extroverted person, whereas I'm quite the opposite. I enjoy good company, but I'm not the best at making new friends. I come across as an acquired taste to most folks. I'm too blunt and rarely have a filter.
We make our way towards the church. Ooh, a First Baptist Church, lovely I think to myself as I roll my eyes. Unfortunately Leah catches me.
"Babes, don't do that. Don't roll your eyes. I promised you'd have fun, and you will! Just believe me," Leah tells me as she drags me through the front doors.
I'm bombarded by other students and teens around my age group. I only know like three people here, one of which is Leah, who is now currently nowhere to be found. Of course she ditches me. Damn, what do I do now?
I go and sit in one of the side rooms on a recliner and pull out my homework from today's classes. Next thing I know, the room is filled with unknown people, and Leah is at the forefront pulling someone towards me.
He's about my height and has dark black hair the color of a crow's feathers. Thickly built frame with a patch of curly hair poking out of the collar of his shirt. On his face sits a brightly perfect smile and the purest blue eyes I've ever seen.
Well, at least he's cute, I think before looking at Leah uncertainly.
"Evie, I want you to meet some of my friends," she exclaims excitedly. "This is Chris. Behind him are Justin, Shane, and Carter."
Chris stepped forward and grabbed my hand to shake it in greeting. What I didn't expect was for him to kiss the back of my hand and compliment me. "It's lovely meeting a beauty such as yourself," he said smoothly.
**End Flashback**
I'm drawn from my memories by a giggle from the other room. My son is awake from his nap and playing with his toys.
I finish mopping the last portion and take the bucket and mop to dump and rinse. After I've cleaned and taken them back to their places, I release William from the room and we go outside to play a little before I put a movie on for him while I prepare dinner.
As we're outside, I pull out my phone. It's time to respond to the texts I received from Chris. I sit there and try to mull over what I'm going to say. But I'm at a loss.
What do I say to him?
I settle for a quick and easy response. The truth. I type it out quickly and hit send. Then I gather my things and convince my child to follow me inside so I can make dinner for us. Mom should be home soon.
